Learning Outcomes

  • Learn about fundamental journalistic values and principles: distinguishing fact from fiction, identifying newsworthiness, verifying assertions, and journalism’s role in democratic society
  • Gain experience with reporting fundamentals: research, observation, and interviewing
  • Tell news stories that answer the five W’s in various media, including text, audio, video
  • Get exposure to data journalism and algorithmic writing
  • Explore and follow style guides
  • Practice the design process, from research to feedback

  • investigate how news gets made, distributed, and consumed today
  • Begin to think about the reader experience

Assignments will usually be posted on Canvas by 3 p.m. on class days. If you do not see an assignment that I have told you about, please email Blake.

10-point scale:

  • Late assignments lose 1 point per day. Students can resubmit work within one week, but grades cannot improve beyond

  • The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law 2019

  • Digital subscriptions to the New York Times ($1/week for students) and the mobile app.

Advising/Participation

  • Each student will meet one-on-one with me at least once during the semester to discuss concerns such as this seminar in relation to the student’s other classes and academic endeavors.
  • Coming to class on time and prepared, contributing meaningfully to class discussions, actively participating in group work, treating your classmates with respect and goodwill — all this matters.

Be in class. Repeated absences will affect your final grade. Specifically, four (4) absences mean a reduction of one letter grade for the course. More than four absences mandate a failing grade unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as:
