Biomass

Energy

What is Biomass?

  • Biomass is waste material from animals and plants which is used to produce energy.
  • It can be made out of waste of farming, animal farming, food processing and gardening.

What is Biomass?

The Production of Biomass

How is it produced?

  • The energy stored in plants is burned. This energy is released as heat, which makes electricity.
  • Many types of biomass, including: wood chips, corn, garbage and etc. are used to create electricity.
  • There are different types of processing biomass.

Main Types of Processing Biomass

  • Combustion--Raises steam with the combustion of biomass. This steam is later expanded through a conventional turbo-alternator which produces electricity.
  • Co-Firing--Fossil fuels provide a low- risk option for producing renewable energy. This reduces the use of fossil fuels.
  • Gasification--Produces a fuel gas which makes electricity.

Types of processing biomass

Efficiency of Biomass

  • Biomass is a renewable source, which means that it will never run out.
  • Biomass does not effect the atmosphere in a bad way.
  • There are many sources and it is widely available.
  • It is cheaper compared to fossil fuels.
  • Reduces amount of waste in landfills.
  • It is one of the energy resources that makes the most energy.

Why is it efficient

The bad sides of Biomass

  • Can lead to deforestation
  • Biomass energy plants requires a lot of space
  • It's process is expensive
  • Sometimes causes pollution.
  • Releases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Cons of Biomass

Countries

  • The countries that produce Biomass the most are: the USA and Brazil.
  • The USA produces the most biomass.
  • Brazil produces the most after America.
