What do we see?

How is this a problem?

How does this relate to obesity?

  • Almost all of those drinks that are distributed contain GMO and students are not aware that genetically modified food is a predominant cause of obesity.
  • According to the CDC, GMO was invented in 1994 and if you look at the obesity trend after 1994, the obesity trend has only increased. (CDC Report Below).
  • The article “Eat GMOs get Fat” states “Genetically modified food... showing that progress towards obesity around the globe has been”

Obesity Trend

So, how is this related to schools or education?

  • Schools play a vital role in creating a positive mindset that will allow our future generations to be successful with their career, personal life, and health.
  • If schools serve these kinds of drinks(listed previously), it might influence a student to believe that these foods are healthy or drink these drinks on a daily basis.
  • Schools must avoid serving foods that have GMO and they should try to only serve organic food to students.
  • Also, schools must educate students about not just nutritional value, but also GMO. This will help create a healthy lifestyle for the students.

What is the Physical Built Environment?

Physical

The physical built environment are the human made structures such as land and buildings that directly relate to the health outcome of the individual. The maintenance, quality and accessibility to the man-made infrastructures are aspects that can either be an advantage or a disadvantage to living a healthy life. The differences in health are caused by the health-wealth gradient which measures the amount of wealth to the quality of healthcare.

Observations

Comparing Physical Built Environments

  • Neighborhood amenities directly relate to obesity rates because people are more likely to exercise when given the access and space to.
  • In the left photo there is a wide space to play that is protected by a gate from outside threats. In addition there is a basketball court that is open to those that live in the neighborhood as an outlet for exercise. In comparison to the left photo the right picture depicts a neighborhood that does not feature any aspects to encourage exercise.
  • The lack of sidewalks is the issue because it causes the individuals to be less likely to be able to safely exercise in their neighborhood which increases obesity.
  • Those individuals with more money have access to buy in a neighborhood that supports an active lifestyle which directly reduces the risk of obesity.

Physical Environment Connection to Obesity

Connections

  • The individuals with more money have access to buy in a neighborhood that supports an active lifestyle which directly reduces the risk of obesity.
  • 70% of obesity-related diseases are from lower-income neighborhoods
  • People with income below 130 percent of the federal poverty level 39 percent of them are obese.
  • The lowest tiered income accounts for 31.5% obesity

Solutions

  • Instituting places to safely workout in each neighborhood is a method to reduce the rates of obesity in lower-income neighborhoods.
  • Building things such as sidewalks or enclosing a space to safely workout.
  • Organize community events to unite the neighborhood and give a sense of unity through exercising.

Too much Sugar = Drug Overdose?

How is this a problem?

The body produces a hormone called Leptin to tell us that we are full and need to stop eating. However overtime as we consume high amounts of sugar, leptin receptors on cell get damaged which prevents the hormone from telling us to stop eating when we are full. Hence, Sugar is a highly addictive drug as the more you consume the more you crave which leads to complications such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Staggering Facts and Statistics

- ACPHD (Alameda county Public Health Department) states that a 16oz of coke contains 41g of sugar which exceeds the DRI of 32g.

- 4g of sugar is equivalent to 1 calorie therefore high sugary foods are also high in calories. Ultimately, both factors can contribute to obesity.

- Moreover, Statistica conducted a survey on various companies and the results indicate that the annual sales of Coca Colawas 37.27 billion U.S dollars; 152 million dollars more than Dasani’s.

Staggering Statistics

- For instance, NYC’s Mayor Bloomberg banned sugary drinks that contained more than 25 calories per 8 fl oz. in 2012.

- Additionally nearly 24,000 flyers that explained the drawbacks of high sugary foods were placed on restaurant doors to influence customers to make healthy choices.

- This movement allowed NYC to lower its obesity rates as a report by NYSDOH indicated that 27% of adults were obese in 2018 which is a 9% decrease from 2011.

How to resolve these barriers?

How to resolve these issues?

  • Spread Awareness

- Similar to New York, South Carolina should require restaurants to post the adverse effects of sugar on restaurant doors.

- Additionally the state should restrict large portions of high sugar and caloric items.

- Increase the prevalence of healthy food stores and lower the prices of healthy foods.

- DHEC should go around to community centers and local hospitals to present the statistics of chronic diseases overtime.

- All health, health science, and PE classes should teach students how to eat healthy and the cons of a sedentary lifestyle

What is Social and Community Detriment?

Social and

Community

What do we see?

What do we see?

  • The student at LHS is filling up her tray with 6 portions of french fries and the children hovering over the Ipad.
  • The student states that this is the tastiest and cheapest lunch option that she eats at least three times a week
  • Normally, a serving of school french fries contains 120 calories and 20g of sodium, but no other nutritional value.
  • The girl eats about 720 calories and 120g of sodium in one sitting three times a week.

How is this a problem?

How is this related to obesity?

  • According to Fitness Pal, one needs to do 72 minutes of running or an exercise equivalent to do that to burn 720 calories.
  • However, as shown in the children hovering over the Ipad, must students do not get much physical activity, they use technology instead.
  • This type of behavior can be very harmful to a student, because their intake does not have any nutrition and they are not burning off these excessive calories they consumed
  • The article “The Dangers of Eating...” states “Foods that are high in calories and have low nutrients can lead to obesity” (Eating Too Much…).

Eating a lot and not Exercising

  • This is a huge problem in our community.
  • Many adults eat a lot of food and they do not exercise, because they do not have time or a place to exercise
  • The girl eats 6 portions of fries almost everyday thinks her behavior is normal, because most of her family and friends eat this way.
  • The article "This is why most Americans don't Exercise" by Tyler Schmall discusses reasons Americans give to avoid exercising.
  • Schmall states "One in four (23 percent) have used eating too much to get out of a planned workout, and another 15 percent said they’d rather watch Netflix ... 42 percent saying that time is the biggest reason they fail to work out."
  • This behavior in our community is tarnishing our health

How can we fix this?

  • Government officials must make an effort to balance the food intake of residents.
  • We must make policies that ensure residents can only buy a certain amount of calories
  • Or, we must find ways to encourage our residents to exercise more
  • We have to ensure that we change this type of behavior in our citizens to establish a healthy and fit nation

What is the Health Care Determinate?

Healthcare

The health care determinate has to do with issues like...

- Quality of/equal care

- Health insurance

-Health literacy

- Access to primary health care

- Transportation

- Finances

- Facility Locations

Pictures

blood pressure medication

Pictures

Urgent care for emergencies

How is this a problem?

- lack of people going to get prevention services

- the number of people getting getting treatment for obesity (blood pressure medicine)

How is this a problem?

Statistics

More Statistics

Under the new guidelines, nearly 46 percent of U.S. adults now would be considered to have high blood pressure, a new study reported.

Further, 36 percent would be recommended for blood pressure medication, the study authors said.

That means the number of American adults diagnosed with high blood pressure would grow to 105 million from 74 million, and those who should be taking medication to 83 million from 72 million.

Solution

Solution?

Some ways to fix the problems would be to...

- inform people that little things that they think don't matter, matter to the doctors therefore they need to go seek prevention

This will prevent having to spend money on medications or having to go to the doctor because of a heart attack.
