Native americans moving

On the move

When the natives had to move to the reservations, many things had to change for them to survive

Buffalo was a major resource for most native american tribes. When the white settlers came west, they started to hunt the buffalo almost into extinction. Only a few hundred buffalo left.

BUFFALO

Reservations

SUBTOPIC 2

Tensions

Tensions

Native american and american settlements were colliding, so there was an increased tension witch led to some battles.

Battles

The battles

There were many battles between native americans and americans. Some of the more major battles include the sand creek massacre and the fetterman massacre, as well as little big horn. George Custer led his forces of about 250 men against the native forces of sitting bull and crazy horse in the montana territory.

Cultural battles

Some of the war between americans and the natives was they wanted native to switch to Christianity. In revolt, the natives used a "ghost dance" that showed hopefully one day the settlers would go away and life would be normal again. It was quickly outlawed, and sitting bull was shot while being arrested.

The Dawes act

Solution (temporary)

After all of the tensions, the government decided to stop tension by filling the weaknesses that americans saw in their culture. They gave them small plots of land to have more privacy and to support a more non-nomadic lifestyle.

Native culture and tradition today

Challenge Question

There are 573 registered tribes in the U.S. These tribes are mostly still building back their original culture because of the traumatizing events the elders had to go through. In the time of the struggles, they were highly encouraged to practice the Christian religion.
