Climate Change

Why?

Why does it matter?

What are the effects?

Discussion Questions

What?

What is Happening?

  • There are many species that have to move to new locations, and changes in the seasons times effecting animals in large ways, which is due to climate change.
  • In the industrial era alone there has been a 40% increase in greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
  • The earth is getting warmer due to climate change, which is forcing some species that live in cold areas to move from their homes and try to relocate and are sometimes not successful. If the amount of climate change keeps on increasing dramatically, then one fourth of all plants and animals in the world will become extinct. Losing these species can cause a chain reaction affecting all animals.

Why is this Happening?

Deforestation

  • Human activities, especially emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and land-use change, are primarily responsible for the climate changes observed in the industrial era, especially over the last six decades.

  • Humans are adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere at a rate far greater than it is removed by natural processes.

  • This creates a long-lived build-up of the gas in the atmosphere and oceans that is driving the climate to a warmer and warmer state.

Greenhouse Gases

Why Does Biodiversity (Animals) Matter?

  • Animals are sentient beings just like us.

  • They're lives deserve to be protected because they too are dependent on the earth to keep them alive.

  • Animals provide humans with food both first hand and second hand. Examples include meat, eggs, milk, etc.

  • Animals/ Insects also help food to grow. Bees, for example, provide pollen to seeds, nuts, fruit, vegetables, and grain.

What are we doing?

How Does This Effect Animals?

  • Some species are already responding to a warmer climate by moving to cooler locations. For example, some North American animals and plants are moving farther north or to higher elevations to find suitable places to live.
  • Climate change also alters the life cycles of plants and animals. For example, as temperatures get warmer, many plants are starting to grow and bloom earlier in the spring and survive longer into the fall.
  • Some animals are waking from hibernation sooner or migrating at different times, too.
  • If the Earth keeps getting warmer, up to one–fourth of all the plants and animals on Earth could become extinct within 100 years.

ENDANGERED Species

  • By 2050, live corals could become rare in tropical and sub-tropical reefs due to the combined effects of warmer water and increased ocean acidity caused by more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The loss of coral reefs will reduce habitats for many other sea creatures, and it will disrupt the food web that connects all the living things in the ocean.

  • A number of traits make Asian Elephants vulnerable to a changing climate, including a declining population size, sensitivity to high temperatures, invasive plant species out competing their regular food sources, and susceptibility to disease. They also have a need for high amounts of fresh water and are suffering with habitat loss due to lack of said water because of climate change.

What Are We Doing?

  • Humans have started to raise awareness about the issue of climate change and how it is starting to affect animals. There are a lot of people that realize that climate change is causing harm to the animals on the earth and trying to do something about it, but there are more people that do not believe that this is happening or do not care that it is happening.
  • Some programs that have been created to stop climate change and prevent the animals from being hurt by are: World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and fight global warming.
