  • HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

  • HIPAA is legislation which provides security provisions and data privacy in order to keep patients’ medical information safe.

Ensures protection of personal, medical information you share with doctors, hospitals, and others who provide and pay for health care. Neighborly client information is also protected under HIPAA law.

What Protects Health Information?

What Protects Health Information?

When a patient gives personal health information to a covered entity, that information becomes protected health information.

This includes:

  • Oral
  • Recorded
  • On paper
  • Sent electronically

Examples Of Protected Health Information

  • Person's physical or mental health

  • Services rendered

  • Payment for those services that include personal information such as:
  • The individual's name or address
  • Social Security or other identifying number
  • Billing information

  • Understand how to use the information clients give us.

  • Since we have protected health information regarding our clients, we must keep client information private.

Appropriate Circumstances To Release Information

  • Information can only be released under certain circumstances with an appropriate authorization.

  • If you are not sure, do NOT give out the information.

  • Volunteers may share client information with their site coordinator/manager and, Michele Michaels, RN, who has social services oversight of Neighborly clients, or other Neighborly employees who are responsible for that client's care or services.
  • Please note: it is a HIPAA violation to include any client name (first, last or both!) or any client-related information in emails. Please CALL to discuss client information with appropriate staff or speak to them in person.

  • For questions regarding the release of information, ask your manager or call Operations Director Mona Allen, at (727) 573-9444.

HIPAA Best Practices For Volunteers

  • Keep your device used for deliveries (either the tablet or smart phone) with you at all times.

  • Paper route sheets were discontinued, and the transition to the MobileMeals app was made to better safeguard client information.

  • Always lock your vehicle, even if you are only a few steps away.

  • Never leave your car running and keys in the car, especially with the tablet/phone inside.

  • Do not share specific information about the clients on your route with others.
