About 200,000 people of the Cree live in Canada, yet a small section live in Montana.
The different groups were James Bay Cree, Swampy Cree, and Moose Cree and they all lived in seperate parts of Canada.
The bands were called the Plains Cree and the Woodlands Cree. The Woodland Cree lived in Eastern Canada and the Plains Cree lived in Northern Canada
The Plains Cree and Woodland Cree lived in two different types of houses.
The Plains Cree lived in teepees covered in buffalo hides and wooden poles.
The Woodland Cree lived in lodges made of wooden poles covered in animal hides and bark or sod.
They made their clothing out of hides of buffalo, mooses, and elk.
The men wore long shirts, leggings, and breechcloths decorated with beeds.
The women wore dresses decorated with beeds.
During winter they would wear long robes or cloaks to keep warm.
They hunted moose, elk, duck, dear, beaver, buffalo, and rabbits. They hunted these animals with bow and arrows and spears.
Some people know the Cree tribe because of their work with beads. They did beed designs on their clothing aswell to make them look more natrual.
When a teenager was ready to become an adult they did not have to reach a certain age, they had to go off on their own without eating until they had a vision. In the vision they would see their gaurdian. This process took several days.
The Cree tribe had a yearly celebration called a Powwow. At the Powwow they would get together and have good food and celebrate their tribe in general. At the end of the Powwow, they would do a dance called The Sun Dance but some people call it The Thirst Dance.
The Cree feared witchcraft because they did not believe in magic but they never wanted to get hurt, meanwhile they respected taboos.
As each band travels by itself, each one has its own chief and council.
In the 19th century the Cree tribe lost most of their land due to hydroelectric dams built in the James Bay area and were forced to live in reserves, as the years went on, their population grew and in the 21st century they were Canada’s largest First Nations group and there are more than 200,000 Cree people living in Canada today. But a small amount live in the Western parts of the United States.
The population of the Cree tribe is more than 200,000, only 96,575 people speak the Cree language, Algonquian.
