Employer Research & The Hidden Job Market

Walk-ins / Cold Calls

Networking

Networking

Connecting with people

Although a written job description may provide some information on a specific job, it is the people doing the actual work that often have the most insight.

What is Networking?

  • Making and maintaining connections
  • Building relationships
  • Generously sharing information
  • Asking clear and non-invasive questions
  • Becoming a great listener
  • Showing appreciation, and following up

Get to know your network

  • Teachers
  • Neighbours
  • Family Friends
  • Current or old employers/co-workers
  • Professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.)

Considering that each “name” will also be

able to generate a list there can be hundreds

of people you can “tap into” for information.

5 Tips to Networking

LEAD

Do you researh. Before you go to an event, know who will be there and your talking points and what not to talk about

LISTEN

Make sure that you're there, present and listening so you can offer valuable insights. If you are truly listening, you will find opportunties to connect with the individual you're talking to

LOOK

Look the person in the eyes. Some people might see lack of eye contact as rude. It may give people the impression that they can't trust you

LEAVE

Don't overstay your welcome in a conversation. When you try to force conversation, you tend to talk about topics that you're not comfortable with and this may cause the person to lose interest

LINGER

Connect with people on LinkedIn and Twitter. Write them an email, remind them who you are and how you can help. Write them to just thank them and explain what you took from the conversation.

Informational Interviews

An informational interview is an informal conversation with someone working in an area that interests you who will give you information and advice as well as an outline of their journey to their current position.

  • Learn about an occupation
  • Network
  • Future job lead

  • Reminder - You are NOT asking for a job, you are looking for insider information and advice

Informational Interview Tips

1. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for a meeting

  • Most people want to help/will be flattered

2. Do Your Research

  • Learn as much as you can about the person

3. Prepare Your Questions

  • Don't waste their time

4. Keep it Short

  • 15 to 30 minutes

5. Cement the Connection

  • Follow up!

Interviewing

How to Prepare for an Interview

  • Research the employer
  • Study your resume
  • Study the job posting
  • Understand the difference between skills based questions and behavioural based questions
  • Mock Interviews
  • Good-night sleep
  • Looking and feeling good
  • Location of employer
  • Time to leave home

What employers are looking for

Communication Skills – Most important is to be able to communicate clearly. Think before you speak. In your use of language, show organized and analytical thinking.

How you say something has been shown to be as important as what you actually say. Use correct construction and complete your sentences with good grammatical structure. You must be able to use language effectively.

Enthusiasm – Remain positive about the position and enthusiastic during the whole interview.

Flexibility – Unwillingness to travel and staying within a limited geographical area will limit your opportunities, it is best for you to express open-mindedness about relocation.

Interest – Show that you have great interest in the company’s activities as well as the position. Demonstrate you know about the business. Ask a few questions, the interviewer will then gain insights into your personal attributes as a candidate.

Positive Attitude – Keep the tone of the interview upbeat throughout. Companies want employees who can achieve great results. A negative person hardly ever gets results. Smile at the interviewer; word your questions and answers positively.

Professionalism – All companies want their employees to display this quality. It is something that shows up in a candidates overall approach. You can show it best in an interview by demonstrating specialized knowledge and abilities in key areas of the job you are seeking.

Self-Confidence – Interviewers will watch your body language to see how self-confident you are. Stand straight; hold your head high, your shoulders back. Use a firm handshake. Look the interviewer in the eyes, even when confronted with unexpected questions.
