Recreation and Leadership

Leadership

What is a leader?

Leaders are people who help themselves and the people who chose to follow that individual to do the right things. Leaders set direction, build an innovative sight, and create the plan to achieve team’s goal.

Leadership

  • Confidence
  • Innovative
  • Self-less
  • Great communication
  • Flexible
  • Honesty

Examples Great Leaders

  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Nelson Mandela

Am I A Leader?

As this course comes to an end I really do feel I have become a great leader. This was because at the start I did not know what it fully meant to be a leader but overtime as the course progressed I became more aware I realized that my contribution in a group was like a leaders contribution. For example, when we had to make a presentation for proteins, instead of waiting around for someone to tell me what to do, I got my group members attention and assigned roles to them so we can get this done without stress. In the end it worked out and the presentation went smoothly.

Am I A Leader?

What skills I worked on:

Communication:

No matter the circumstance or the people I was placed to work with I was still able to develop my communicating skills and work efficiently with them. Ex: mentorship, overtime we talked more frequently every time we met up.

Responsibility:

During the event planning, when i became more responsible and finished my work on time my group trusted me more with what tasks had to be done.

Flexibility:

Finding solutions to the issues we faced was hard but I was able to still work around the obstacles we faced as a group. Ex: During the event when not every group brings in the money I suggested we message one of the group member to tell other group members aswell to bring the money.

What skills I worked on:

Personality Profile

My personality profile was GOLD but I was one off of being ORANGE, which meant I was organized and punctual, loyal, dependable, caring, adaptive to change and am a good planner. This was a good representation of what I was because I am an organized individual and I always want to get my things done on time or even earlier so I have excess stress. If I face any issues I am able to adapt to this and make the changes that have to happen.

Personality Profile

Leadership Style

My personality profile fits really well with my leadership style because since I want to get things done ahead of time, I would make sure my group members get their parts done ahead of time as well. This way my group members and I will have less stress as the due date comes close.

Leadership Style

Change over time?

I think over time there was not much change and that I was still GOLD. This is because when it came to assignments and group work I would still get the work done and try to keep my group members on their feet so they as a group we can get the assignment done with and then relax after.

Change over time?

Obstacles

Some obstacles I faced in my development as a leader were:

  • setting a goal
  • motivating others to work around obstacles
  • making the team trust my ideas and decisions

Obstacles

In Depth

  • Bringing everyone on the same page and bringing together everyones ideas was hard.
  • When the group members give up after something does not go the way it was supposed to, it was hard to give them motivation and make them think of ways to overcome the obstacle.
  • Overtime my group members started trusting my instincts but intially they would have to get comfortable with me and how I work so they could trust me.

In Depth

Overcoming Obstacles

I was able to overcome all 3 of these obstacles through time and communcation with my group members. The more I communicated with my group members the more they would know about me which lead to the group all being on one page and overcome obstacles together as one. The trust built over time made the group very dependant on eachother and gave succesful results.

Overcoming Obstacles

Overall Outcome

These obstacles I faced made me a more flexible leader than what I caame into the course as. This is because if the same problems I faced were to arise again I will right away know how to deal with it. Therefore making me a well rounded flexible leader who is adaptive to changes.

Overall Outcome

Event

"Dodge your Stress" the name gives the tale of how the event went. There were many ups and downs through the course of the event but we were able to come out with a fun stressless event. The process may have been stressful but the event itself ran smoothly and stressless.

Event

Needs Assessment

When we took the survey on what students wanted to do majority chose ball but then the runner up was dodgeball. This was a good thing because as a group we wanted the students of MCI to bring back those elementry dodgeball skills.

Needs Assessment

Proposal

The proposal was a success in our hands because Ms. Maharaj approved of it and our plan was validated. We were able to work collaboratively and spilt up what each group member does equally. This was an efficient method which led us to finishing the proposal ahead of time. Instead of cramming it before the day it was due.

Action Plan

The action plan was an organized way of knowing what each person did and the things that had to be done on the day of the event. It was an important tool to make as it was a guide when ranking how well each person contributed to the event and the event planning process.

Action Plan

The Event

December 8, the event day, that day went really well and better than we initially thought it would. This was possibly because we had a lack of motivation that the event would go good after a low amount of sales. Despite that the event went great with having an intense finals full court match between 2 teams which brought up the enjoyment in fans watching and the players themselves. Overall it was a great event, all the stress and work that was put in was all worth it when we achieved our goal of stress less afternoon.

Mentorship

My partner was a Tamil person named Sagekaran. At the start we would not talk much and the conversations will always be dead. This changed however as the course progressed. We were able to talk more and say "hi" to each other in the hallway. Eventually a lot changed from where it started from, we maintained a positive, engaging relationship.

Main Areas of Need

At the start we had trouble:

  • communicating
  • sharing ideas
  • always a one way conversation where only I would talk

As the course progressed:

  • more engaging conversations
  • mutual intrests
  • two-way conversations

Main Areas of Need

Healthy Active Lifestyle

To be honest my partner was a very unhealthy guy who would eat junk food and not get a lot of exercise. Nonetheless this changed when I brought up the activities he could do in the area and the foods he should eat so he can be healthy. He said how he is going to basketball at the community centre which I suggested and how he plans to change is diet.

Future?

With recreation and liesure there are many fun careers out there that an individual can pursue. Here are some careers:

  • Live Events Coordinator
  • Park Ranger
  • Coach
  • Amusement Park Manager

Future?

Live Event Coordinator

As a live event coordinator you can work for the MLSE, what you have to do is just coordinate events that happen during the game or even after the game. For example for a half time show at the Raptors game you will coordinate what happens and who is performing.

Live Event Coordinator

Park Ranger

The main responsibility of a park ranger is protecting and supervising designated outdoor areas. Park rangers patrol the grounds and make sure that campers, hikers and other visitors are following the rules.

Park Ranger

Coach

The role of the coach is not just coaching, but to make the athletes them selves better. Sports coaches assist athletes in developing to their full potential. They are responsible for training athletes in a sport by analyzing their performances, instructing in relevant skills and by providing encouragement. Example of a great coach is Gregg Popovich.

Coach

Amusement Park Manager

An amusement park manager has the responsibility of overseeing all of the park's daily operations such as ride maintenance, customer revenue, and park cleanliness. These managers typically work both indoors and outdoors where they run administrative duties and engage with staff and customers.
