CLIMB TO

SUCCESS

The Beginning

“Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don’t fight them. Just find a new way to stand.”

-Oprah Winfrey

01

To develop leadership qualities such as self-confidence and courage by the end of this month.

My Goal

Rationale

A lack of confidence or belief in ourselves can keep us from telling the truth, taking a risk, or raising our hands and as a result, we miss out on opportunities that can put us where we want to go (Killelea, 2016).

Have you ever just gone about your day and random flashbacks occur? It's usually the most embarrassing moments in life that you just want to erase from your memory.

How did I come to realize my goal?

Yes those.

Realization

I found a reoccurring theme from all those lovely flashbacks: I couldn't speak up for myself because I did not have the confidence or courage ......

Resulting in lingering feeling of injustice and being wronged.

I realize I am my biggest enemy and I need to change my mindset because it has hindered me in my learning and personal development. It's an ongoing cycle that I want to break.

Why is it important?

Values

Leaders can be made

Taking risks is important is because I believe that individuals who are not afraid to challenge the status quo, push limits and seize opportunities are essential attributes of an effective leader. Therefore it is important to develop self-efficacy as it reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one's own motivation, behavior, and social environment (Grossman & Valiga, 2016).

My expectations for my mentor is someone who is:

My Mentor

  • Approachable
  • Knowledgeable and motivated to teach
  • Supportive, open minded
  • A good listener and is trustworthy
  • Patient and friendly
  • Experienced and enthusiastic
  • Demonstrates interest and is passionate about what they do
  • Committed to the mentoring process
  • By providing the opportunity, skills and support for students to learn.
  • Share their own successes (and failures) as students, and provide a good example for students to follow.
  • Counsel, give advice and tips

How will they support me?

  • They will understand and adapt to the learning preferences of their mentees while sharing their expertise, time, and insight.
  • In addition, they will motivate their mentees, as well as challenge them to think differently and convey the importance of planning and investigation

Engagement Plan

Her leadership style is more trans-formative and she adopts a humanistic approach when mentoring.

Mentor Approach

"Humanistic approach sees the mentor as facilitator of student-centred learning. This involves creating the environment for learning and identifying resources available to the student. The student is empowered to become responsible and self-aware."

- Kilgallon, K., & Thompson, J. (2012).

Getting to know myself

Objective 1

1. Identify my weaknesses and recognize my strengths by writing a list

Strategy #1

Rationale: Knowing yourself, accepting yourself, being comfortable in your skin are the baselines of true confidence (Killelea, 2016). At the end of the day, that’s what confidence boils down to believing that you have what it takes and having the grit to show it (Killelea, 2016).

2. Recognize negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts (practicing self-affirmation by saying 3 positive things every day).

Strategy #2

A study showed that positive self-talk can enhance self-confidence and reduce cognitive anxiety (Hatzigeorgiadis, Zourbanos, Mpoumpaki, & Theodorakis, 2009).

3. Acknowledge and keep a physical tally of when I am comparing myself with others and reflect on why I am feeling that way.

Strategy #3

People can build up their confidence by understanding that there is no such thing as someone who has got it all together. The trouble comes when we constantly compare ourselves to other people, or to our perceptions of other people (killer, 2016).

Reach the Top

Whatever it takes

06

Change my perspective to focus on solutions and not problems

Objective #2

Recognize failure as a part of growing and overcoming fear by take risks to overcome 2 of my fears.

Strategy #1

Rationale

It’s important to know how comfortable you are with risk so that you can gradually start moving beyond your comfort zone. When we don’t take risks, we allow our fear to paralyze us. It robs us of opportunity, of advancement, and, above all, of confidence (Killelea, 2016).

Do something I’ve been procrastinating because of fear and share it with someone.

Strategy #2

Rationale

No one escapes failure. Solution based thinking can revitalize your mind and help you focus on where you are headed, how you feel, and more important, how you view failure from that moment on (Killelea, 2016).

Change a small habit and keep track of my progress on my phone. EX. Waking up early, sleeping early, drinking more water, procrastination

Strategy #3

Rationale

If we were to dwell too long in the problem stage, we get more and more depressed about a situation. By taking baby steps, we gain back some control (Killelea, 2016).

Self Empowerment

Objective #3

Set a fitness goal and reward oneself for achieving it by the end of the month.

Strategy #1

Rationale

When we think about progress, we often imagine how good it feels to achieve a long-term goal or experience a major breakthrough. These big wins are great—but they are relatively rare. The good news is that even small wins can boost our motivation (Oppong, 2019).

Strategy #2

Empower myself with knowledge by increasing my competence in an area I feel like I lack ex. Finances

Learning something new and having knowledge that you can put into action gives you the ability to show your worth. It gives you skills that are useful in your life and in your career (Sanders, 2019).

Rationale

Find something to accomplish ex. Hobbies like photography, take up piano

Strategy #3

By focusing on daily victories, you reinforce your actions and thoughts, thus making it likely you’ll have more small wins on subsequent days (Oppong, 2019).

Rationale

Success

You made it!

" Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them"

- Albert Einstein
