New Zealand

Political System

Aneta Sumková 3.AG

Type of the state

  • New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government.

  • This means that the head of the state is the Queen as Sovereign. (Currently Queen Elizabeth II)

  • The Sovereign and the House of Representatives together make up the Parliament of New Zealand.

The Queen's role

The Queen's role

  • In the 2000s New Zealand is independent from Britain in almost every way, but Queen Elizabeth II is still the country's official head of state.

  • The Queen of New Zealand acts entirely on the advice of New Zealand Government Ministers.

What is the Queen responsible for?

  • Appointing Governor-General for New Zealand, which she does on the advice of the country's Prime Minister.

  • Sending messages for national celebrations or tragedies. She also honours New Zealand achievements at events in the UK.

  • She is the Head of the Armed Forces.

  • The Queen of New Zealand's formal title is: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen of New Zealand and Her Other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

Political regime

  • New Zealand is a Representative democracy.

  • It's a form of democracy in which people vote for representatives who then vote on policy initiatives.

  • Direct democracy is where citizens themselves vote for or against specific proposals or laws.

Checks and Balances

The system of government works by having 3 separate branches of government. This ‘separation of powers’ makes sure no one part of government has too much power.

Legislative

Legislature

  • The Legislature of New Zealand consists of Members of Parliament and the Governor-General.

  • Unlike Australia and England, New Zealand no longer has a second chamber in the form of a Senate or an upper House.

  • New Zealand is now the single chamber House of Representatives.

  • There are usually 120 members of parliament in the House of Representatives

What is the role of the Legislative power?

  • Make new laws and update old ones

  • Check the actions of the Executive

  • Represent New Zealanders by giving a voice to different ideas from people and organisations

  • Examine and approve the government’s taxes and spending

Executive

Executive

  • This is what we often refer to as 'the government'.

  • New Zealand is a unitary government - one central government is running the whole country.

  • It is headed by the prime minister.

  • The executive is responsible for making day-to-day decisions on how and what New Zealand should spent its money on.

  • The parties which got the most votes in the election, form the executive.

  • Executive is made up of the prime minister and the cabinet ministers who are senior members of those parties. It also includes ministries, police and New Zealand's defence force.

Judicial

Judiciary

  • This is New Zealand's court system.

  • It is the responsibility of court judges to interpret and apply the laws passed by parliament.

  • They do this by hearing legal cases and deciding on an appropriate outcome.

  • The courts can also review the actions of the executive government to check if they are also following the law.
