NATO
- In 1948 he created a program that would lay down the hemispheres military strategy in terms of their defense. It was called the OAS (Organization of American States), and to sum it up it was a big alliance.
- He also created NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1949 s a response to Russia's blockade in Berlin to the US, Britain and France sections
- Didn't do much to aid Latin America when he knew they were struggling. Yet he did ask congress to pass Point IV Technical Assistance, which would help less developed countries build themselves up.
- To stop the spread in other countries though he created the Truman Doctrine which said that he would send aid to any democratic country under the thread off communism.
- The Marshall Plan is also something else that was passed as a way to help foreign countries. It was aid from the US to Europe to help them rebuilt their countries and cities after the disasters of the WWII.
- And the first big failure in terms of the spread of communism. Communist took over China in 1949. Mao Ze Dong, a communist, becomes leader and then the largest population the world is a communist lead country. It became the first country that the US failed to contain.
The Marshall Plan
- Created a plan in 1954, New Look, it would make it so that they would rely on bombs for warfare and there would be less conceptional forces. Yet after negative retaliation from the people he stopped it.
- To intercept with the Soviet bombers in Canada NORAD (North American Air Defense Command) was created in 1957.
- Eisenhower's idea of dealing with the USSR was to scare them by threatening the, withe possible use of nuclear weapons. (Eisenhower had to deal with a new USSR leader, Nikita Khrushchev).
- There was the launch of the first satellite by the USSR and it really bothered the US since they saw it as a race that the USSR was winning and the US can;t have that. This caused the US to pass federal laws hat would dedicate more money to go into science and math education. It was the first time the federal government got involved in education.
- Now in Latin America closer to the US, Fidel Castro was leading a communist revolution in Cuba. He was able to rise so easily because Cubans were frustrated with the US imperialism. They were upset by the large control that the US had over Cuba with them using their country, land, resources for their own benefit. This all allowed Castro to rise easily along with the help of the USSR that was backing up Castro. That caused the US to place an embargo in Cuba that to this day is still set in place.

- Put in billions (specifically $67 billion) into the war and throughout the people began to lose interest in the war. They would call it useless and "Truman's War". Yet Truman got involved in it to contain communism and avoid it spreading since he was fearful of it reaching South Korea.
- He send forces to South Korea in late June, 1950 to help the democratic nation from North Korea's communist invasion, not telling congress which bit him back in the end since he was criticized for it. He also deployed the United States 7th Fleet to Taiwan to stand guard against China (also spreading communism) and send military aid to French forces fighting communism in Vietnam.
- Although by the end of his term he had a low approval rating around two decades after people began to appreciate him more. They would say that he rose to the challenges thrown at him at the time and did the best he could with what was given to him.
"By God, I'm going to let them have it!" Truman in regards to North Korea's attempt to seize South Korea.
-Was the one that at the end of the day brought The Korean War to an end (something that both Truman and Eisenhower wanted). It was something that during his campaign he promised and did end up fulfilling.
- Went to South Korea and spoke around, visiting troops. commanders and SK leaders. He looked for an end to the war through both diplomacy and military muscle-flexing. And only seven months after Eisenhower's inauguration the war came to an end with armistice signed.
- Eisenhower's hand in ending the Korean War worked to the U.S. advantage. It showed the willingness that the US had to fight aggression and made Eisenhower's relationship in Europe stronger. At the end ensuring that the U.S. could pursue its military build up as called upon on the National Security Council Policy Paper No. 68.

GI Bill of Rights
- The GI Bill of Rights was passed under his term which gave veterans money to finish school, buy a house or start a business. This money was well invested and would help the economy since after at the end money would be invested in the market. This also helped so that soldiers wouldn't end up unemployed.
- There was also changes that took place in the US after WWII. There was the rapid increase of the suburbs, Levittowns. This all worked to fill up the demand for houses being bought by veterans with their money from the GI Bill and these towns worked to fulfill the growing demand. There was also a spike in birth rates bringing into the world the baby boomers. Veterans began having kids and with the economy doing so well people were having tons and tons of kids.
- Truman became the first president to after the civil war actually try and take a role regarding the Civil War. He actually issued an executive order, which bypasses Congress, that made it so that the military would be desegregated. This action is seen as the very first move in the modern civil rights movements. He basically was saying that segregation was bad, people should be equal and the military is where it should start. It wasn't taken lightly and there was a lot of conflict that got brought up after the the order.

- He found ways to grow the economy since he did believe that Truman caused quite a bit of inflation and economic decrease.
- Passed the National Highway Act which just says that there would be more highways built. These highways would be 4 or more lanes and would connect large parts of the US, allowing more travel and would facilitate travel. Highways were built through all the US and there was a connection through all the states.
- The center of the civil rights movement. Something that at first Eisenhower was not interested in but after pressure and the growth of the issue he was forced to take action. During his time in office the Brown vs, Board of Education Topeka, Kansas, the Rosa Parks- Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Little Rock Crisis were all important things that happened. What happened is that segregation was declared illegal as the 14th amendment. And a year into the bus boycott the Supreme Court declared that segregated buses would come to a stop. And in terms of the racial conflicts that rose when Little Rock School Board decided that they would allow nine Black students to attend a white high school Eisenhower actually took action. He sent federal troops to force the integration in the school, ans it took one thousand soldiers to let simply nine Black students into the school and some federal troops stayed there to assure the safety of these students throughout the whole school year.
