Waste (or wastes) are unwanted or unusable materials. Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or is worthless, defective and of no use.
1. “No thank you, I’m fine.” (free samples, promotion bags, plastic bags,…)
2. Get a water bottle
3. Buy in bulk (use bags, jars, …)
4. Learn to pack lunch in a reusable container
5. Buy to last.
6. Start a compost bin (= Rot)
7. Find a way to replace plastic cups / take out boxes
8. Repair instead of buying new things
9. Recycle as much as you can
10. Reuse as much as you can
We should apply the principles of zero waste project in our routine life, but how do we contribute?
The kitchen is filled with disposable items that are responsible for a whole lot of waste. There are less harmful alternatives like reusable bags and Earth friendly sponges. Also, leftovers can be used efficiently.
Carbon Trust estimates that Carbondioxide emissions associated with clothing account for three percent of global emissions. So that, buying fewer items of higher quality will be good for both your pocket and nature. Also, second hand shopping is a new trend and it is an another great alternative.
According to RecycleWorks.org, disposable lunches (to-go packaging, plastic utensils, etc) generate 100 pounds of trash per person annually. So bringing your own lunch is a great way to start. Also, going digital while taking notes, not printing unnecessarily and recycling are essential in working life.
Using more natural compounds like white vinegar and baking soda is as effective as other cleaning products. Also, instead of harmful chemical cosmetics, more natural cosmetics can be used or even can be made at home.
Zero waste needs businesses to play a key role so it creates jobs.
Provides cost saving.
Also, supports a local circular economy.
Creating Jobs:
The recycling industry, in terms of employees, is the size of auto industry!
Cost Saving:
All zero waste businesses have saved money.
TYPES OF ECONOMY
LINEAR ECONOMY:
Living in a linear economy seemed fairly stable until we started consuming at higher rates and planned obsolescence became normal. Now we're consuming at a completely unsustainable rate.
We are living in a linear economy, and out earth has finite resources.
RECYCLING ECONOMY:
Waste to wealth
CIRCULAR ECONOMY:
A circular economy
is a restorative and regenerative system in which resource input and waste, emission, and energy leakage are minimized by slowing, closing, and narrowing material and energy loops.
SUSTAINABILITY
AND
ECONOMY
Sustainability in economy is a new way of looking at the relations between markets, customers and natural resources. Its purpose is to change the existing economic model, which is based on the approach of “take, make, and dispose”, and it utilizes the power of innovative business models and technology.
Sustainable industry, on the other hand, means that companies that make production turn sustainability into a adopted strategy throughout the production and consumption processes.
ZERO WASTE REGULATION
The aim of the related regulation is to establish and develop "zero waste management system" which aims to protect the environment and human health and all resources in waste management processes in line with the principles of sustainable development with effective management of raw materials and natural resources.
Zero Waste Project in Turkey is implemented by the ministry, and it has 7 steps.
1. Focal point
2. Current Situation Detection
3. Planning
4. Requirements and procurement
5. Education
6. Application
7. Reporting
The recycling rate is 46% in the European Union countries compared with 13% in Turkey. The project aims to increase that ratio to 35% .
As of May 2019, 18,750 public institutions in Turkey had begun to be included in the zero waste project, separating their waste at its source.
In order to achieve success in the zero waste project and increase the waste recycling rate, household wastes should also be separated at their source and collected with this system.
The zero waste approach has taken off most strongly in Italy and Spain, where dozens of municipalities have signed up.
Fifteen years ago, all the Slovenian capital’s waste went to landfill, but by 2025, at least 75% of its rubbish will be recycled.
Where human being is, there is consumption in there, where consumption is, there is manufacturing in there, where manufacturing is, there is waste in there, and finally, where waste is, there is at least one environmental engineer in there. Therefore environmental engineering is in the heart of the zero waste project.
Zero waste reduces our climate change impact.
Zero waste conserves resources and minimizes pollution.
Sewage wastes are called waste water and are the most important pollutants in water pollution. Pollution and effects of liquid wastes in water:
Nuclear power plants, vehicles, industrial facilities, landfills, fossil fuel use and fires are sources of gas waste.
Environmental impacts of wastes;
Landfills also emit hazardous air pollutants such as mercury, benzene, toluene and chloroform.
Zero waste prevents heat from the ecosystem and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Solid waste means any garbage, refuse, sludge from a wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded materials including solid, semi-solid. If these wastes are recycled or left unused, we gain in energy and storage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Effects of :
As we approach zero waste, there is a significant reduction in the rate of litter going to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.
Also the damage to natural resources becomes reduced, and the consumption of natural resources is reduced.
