A drainage plane, by definition, is an artificial path meant to bring rainwater from the roof and walls to the ground. This can be roof shingles, to special layers in/on a wall for guiding water away from a house.
A drainage plane can be used for collecting rain water that would have otherwise been wasted. This collected water could then be used to water plants, or to clean.
Drainage planes can increase the life of a building too, since it will always allow water to flow down the sides and roof, meaning water never pools up in one spot, causing corrosion and degradation of wood.
