B

This change can be seen as the rising of sea levels, average heat index’s spiking to record temperatures, increased greenhouse gas levels, etc.

C

While these shifts can be natural, human activities, such as burning fossil fuels (like oil, coal, and gas), have been the leading cause since the 1800s.

A

Climate change, also known as global warming, is known as the rapidly increasing average temperature of the surface of the Earth.

C

B

Climate Change

While that is still a part of the illegal wildlife trade, it is only a miniscule part of it and various species are declining because of it.

It isn’t only about the illegal pet trade, where these endangered species are taken out of their wild populations to be sold through the pet trade.

Non-native species, both animals and plants, can be aggressive invaders to the ecosystem's native species.

A

They will dramatically alter the natural life of certain native species and ultimately destroying that habitat. These animals can be introduced by people both purposefully and accidentally which is the case, most often.

B

Illegal Wildlife Trade

The illegal wildlife trade is very dangerous for all our wildlife whether that be live plants, animals, and wildlife products such as furs, horns, skins, etc.

Invasive Species

For example, the Burmese Pythons in the Florida Everglades have wreaked havoc on Florida’s native animals, both big and small. These animals were not only purposefully released by their negligent owners, but also have escaped from their loosely locked enclosures as results of hurricanes and other incidents.

Water Pollution is a chemical or physical change in the water that directly harms the health of animals, humans, and other organisms.

Zoonotic diseases, also known as Zoonosis, refers to diseases that can be passed between both animals and humans. A large majority of the modern diseases that we know today such as, rabies, Lyme disease, tuberculosis, etc., are all examples of diseases that were spread from animals to humans.

Research Questions

1) How can we detect water pollution fast and effectively?

2) What are some ways that we can prevent invasive populations from spreading?

3) How does climate change and other environmental factors impact Zoonotic diseases both in type and frequency?

Water Pollution

Zoonotic Diseases

B

There are eight different major types of water pollution that vary from both inorganic and organic types of pollutants.

A variety of animals can carry these diseases such as mosquitoes, bats, cats, rodents, deer, etc.

C

The eight main types of water contaminants are organic, agriculture runoff, suspended solids/sediments, inorganic, pathogens, thermal, microorganisms (bacteria and fungi), and radioactive pollutants.

We have learned to prevent these diseases from spreading by keeping your hands clean (both before and after handling animals), preventing bites from mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, etc., and avoiding handling animals that you know are sick.
