As many as 25,900 marine mammals may have been harmed by the GP oil spill. At least four species of marine mammals have been killed by the oil spill, including bottle nose dolphins, spinner dolphins, melon-headed whales and sperm whales.
Oil Spills have been effecting the ecosystems in the world since the 1890s when the first oil spill was ever recorded. This happened when the crude oil was being transported to a well, and started the thousands of oil spills happening each year, all coming in a small size.
With the ocean taking up more than more than 70% of the earth, its bound to have a lot of Population done by humans.
According to Wikipedia, Many of these spills are caused by accidents involving barges, pipelines, tankers, refineries, storage facilities and drilling rings which are caused by irresponsible and rash mistake people. It can also be caused by cheap equipment breaking down.
The reason this stuff is happening is because of a few reasons, some which include terrorism attacks, war, illegal dumpers or vandals. But the main reason this is happening is because of companies wanting to save money by cutting corners on their safety precautions.
The effect of oil spills on our environment is destroying and endangering vast species or ecosystems full of organisms on the ocean that need to lived for other species food source.
Oil is a highly flammable does not mix with water and terrible to digest.
Oil can be a dangerous chemical to all living things, And the amount of oil we allow to pullout our air, our oceans, our lungs, It's not okay for us but think about Their air, their ocean, their lungs. the oil that gets in the water kill of lost of plants disrupting entire ecosystems. If we allow this to happen much longer there won't be an ecosystem to pollute.
People have been trying to stop this problem by tightening bolts on engines (because they can shake loose when the engine is used), they also replace old or broken hydraulic lines and fittings, add oil trays to the engines, and create bilge socks out of oil absorbent pans. This solution has partly worked, but the problem still exists. and it is only getting worse.
The solution we have came up with is to put a tax on not properly checking for improper safety. The reason companies are cutting corners on their safety precautions for the money. They don't care about the ocean organisms like the royal blue tang and moray eel. If we give a tax for not properly checking if the ship is in working order, this will not let the big business safe money by avoiding the safety precautions. This will decrease the population in our community ecosystems and help in the fight for global warming.
With the magnitude of all these things it may feel like you have no control into what goes on but really there are many ways you can help. For instance, You could spread awareness weather it's a school project or writing a book. You can also clean up the world around you. While yes we can can't remove oil from the ocean we can clean up a little bit and save some lives. So next time you think you can't change anything. Brainstorm and come up with ways you can.
