Kenya has
Langauges
over 40 recognised ethnic commuities
- Laws of Kenya written in English

- status quo maintained at independence in 1963
- Limited access to justice
History of Kiswahili
Kiswahili
- As a result of coastal trade
- Draws influence from Arab, Hindi Portuguese, German and bantu languages
Regulation
- Tanzania considered an authority as it is their national language and is preferred over English.
- This is because the post colonial government was largely socialist
- Spoken by nearly the entire polpulation of Kenya
- It was recognized as a national language in Kenya in 1974
- Neo colonialism influence as well as classism made many law makers reject the use of Kiswahili in official settings
- In 2010, following Constitutional reform it became an official language alongside English
How it works
- All official communication is available in both English and Kiswahili
- Parliamentary proceedings may be conducted in both English and Kiswahili
- Court proceedings may be conducted in both languages depending on parties' preference
- However, laws are written in English.
