What is bio-plastic?

What is Bioplastic?

Bioplastics are plastic materials produced from renewable biomass sources. Bioplastic can be made from agricultural by-products and also from used plastic bottles and other containers using microorganisms.

Properties of Bio plastic

Properties

  • Some are stiff and brittle.
  • Some are rubbery and moldable.
  • Properties may be manipulated by bending polymers or genitic modifications.
  • Most Degrade at 185C.
  • Moisture resistant, water insoluble, optically pure(professionaly manufactured).

Usual Plastic VS Bio Plastic

Usual Plastic VS Bio plastic

Disadvantage of

usual plastic

  • Takes approx. 500 years to degrade.
  • Produces toxic gasses and smoke.
  • Causes threat to the aquatic eco-system.
  • Dumping them causes soil degradation.

Why use Bio plastic?

Why use Bio plastic?

  • Easily compostable and biodegrades in a short amount of time.
  • Does not release toxic gasses and hence reduces carbon footprint.
  • Saves and reduces dependency on petroleum.
  • lower energy costs in manufacturing.

Process

Bioplastics are manufactured from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste, etc.

There are differnt types of bioplastics that can be made by using specific biomass sources.

Process

Types of bioplastic

There are mainly 8 types of bioplastic:

  • Starch-based plastics
  • Cellulose-based plastics
  • Protein-based plastics
  • Aliphatic polyesters
  • Polyhydroxyalkanoates
  • Polyamide 11
  • Bio-derived polyethylene
  • Polyhydroxyurethanes
  • Lipid derived polymers

Method of Preparation:

  • Cut the banana peels into small pieces.
  • Place it into the blender
  • Add 250 mL water
  • Blend into fine paste and pour into beaker.
  • Heat and stir gently until it boils.
  • Filter it and remove the excess water.
  • Use sponge to dry residue.
  • Place mixture into evaporating dish.
  • Add vinegar, thyme, cinnamon and honey and then mix.
  • Place it into bake paper and leave for a few days.

Our Project

  • 2 x 1 L beaker
  • Sieve
  • Blender
  • Bakepaper
  • Wooden roller
  • Sponge
  • 250mL Beaker
  • Evaporating dish

Some Facts and Figures:

Facts and Figures

  • Genetic modification can be used to alter certain physical properies of bioplastic, making its usage range wider.
  • The price of bioplastics is stable and is continually going down as demand is rising.
  • The usage of bio plastics is growing steadily and companies like wallmart and mars have started to use bioplastics.
