Before the columbian exchange and the discovery of tobacco (to the Old World and settlers in the New World) the world was a very different place.
And obviously as people were going out in attempts to get to and explore the new world they came upon this plant called (scientific name) nicotiana tabacum which the locals had already discovered
Many local tribes or civilizations had already started growing and utilizing tobacco for its main purpose being smoking
Although it was smoked (its main use today) it was mainly use for religious, medicinal, and recreational purposes
Tobacco was also grown in North America
In North America native americans mainly used tobacco for religious and medicinal purposes much like South America
Tobacco originally reached Europe being mainly England, Spain, France, and Portugal in the mid 1550s to mid 1560s then finally basically the whole rest of the world in the 17th century
Much like today even back then tobacco was a controversial topic
For example King James I wrote "A Counterblaste to Tobacco" and even imposed a tax on it
Along with many other people including the church calling the use of it evil and sinful
Beliefs
Just like with the Native Americans some people believed Tobacco to possibly have medicinal benefits
For example during the Great Plague of 1665 tobacco was seen as a defense against bad air
In general Tobacco was also believed to be able to cure just about anything from epilepsy to cancer
In Europe tobacco was kinda used like the Native Americans but more emphasis was based on the actual smoking aspect
Like previously mentioned there were some attempts at medicinal uses but it was here were smoking became the primary function of tobacco
With the extremely successful introduction of tobacco into Europe, the Americas needed to expand very quickly to adapt to such high demands. In turn, plantations became extremely popular throughout the Americas to keep up with amounts being sold.
For example in Jamestown by the 1680s over 25,000,000 pounds of tobacco were being exported each year
As a result of the large growth in plantations, Slaves also became very highly sought after. Slave trading in africa became a neccesary thing for the Americas to keep tobacco production running smoothly.

Tobacco currently is being used all around the world in very large quantities. In the U.S alone about 249 billion cigarrettes are sold in a given year.
Cigarettes, while now are proven to be very bad for health overall, are still extremely common in all parts of the world. Around 8 Million people die every year from smoking alone.
Tobaccos' mass production caused it to be one of the most common and highly sought-after cash crops.
Its importance even drove it to become a form of currency in some areas of the world.
With this form of "currency" tobacco was used to even pay taxes in Virginia
