About My Book
In the middle of WW2 everything that she knows is wrong, is suddenly right. Will she have to chose where her loyalty lies, and if so what side will she chose?
The setting of "I am Defiance" takes place in Munchen, Bavaria, Germany. And in Switzerland when they escape from Germany.
My main characters are Brigitte, Angelika, Papa, Marianne, Uncle Otto, Sofie, and The White Rose Members
Brigitte-A 13 year old girl who is smart, considerate, sneaky, caring, and brave. Brigitte is the main character in my book. She demonstrates how hard life can be when trying to balance being good while having an opinion.
Angelika-A brave 19 year old with a big heart, she is also a hard worker, she is courageous, and she is a strong and smart girl.
Angelika is Brigitte's older sister. She has a disability and she inspires people to keep going even though you want to give up!
Marianne-Marianne is a thoughtful but mean teenager, she is very curious, stubborn, and loyal.
Marianne is Brigitte's best friend, but she doesn't want to be when she finds out that she is keeping a secret from her.
Papa-Papa always puts others before himself, he is a caring, kind, respectful, and a brave man.
Papa sacrificed himself in order to save Brigitte and Angelika. If you were in that situation, your parent would do the same.
Uncle Otto- Uncle Otto is kind, nice, helpful, welcoming, and thoughtful. He is also a hero when he took in Brigitte, Angelika, and Papa.
Uncle Otto was Angelika's and Brigitte's mother's sister.
They were all brave for doing what's right, and they were the heroes to everyone who was under Hitler's spell.
The White Rose was real, and so were the people in it.
First
Brigitte's German Girl's Club is encouraging everyone that Hitler is good and, and Jews are bad. Hitler wants perfect German people, so if you're sick or have a disability, you are treated like a jew. But no one knows that Brigitte's sister, Angelika, has the polio disease and some of her body doesn't work as well as the other parts of her body.So Angelika has to keep it from everyone outside her family, she also has to sneak away to the Hospital for treatment.
The bombings are getting closer to Brigitte's city, and Ulm, where Angelika had to work in a factory.Angelika and Brigitte where talking about the future, and Angelika told Brigitte that if Hitler found out their secret, he could sterilize her and make her unable to have children. When Brigitte went to her JM meeting, she realized that one of her friends wasn't there. Adelita had a book by a forbidden author. Somehow their group leader, Elisabeth found out and reported her family. So her family had to go to a concentration camp, even though they weren't Jewish. When Brigitte went to go get the mail she noticed a strange leaflet from a group called, "The White Rose", which is an anti Nazi party. But why would Brigitte's family get one, they liked Hitler. Brigitte's dad tells her what's going on, and Brigitte agrees, Hitler is awful. They have gotten 4 leaflets in less than 15 days. But for some reason they haven't been getting them for the past couple of weeks. Did they stop, or did they get caught?
Angelika is off to Ulm and her family is terribly worried about the bombings striking the factory. But Brigitte wakes up to her father making a trap door in the middle of the night. It was in Angelika's room, and it would be used to get to the bomb shelter immediately. As predicted, the bomb siren was going off, Munchen is being bombed by England. Brigitte and her Papa hurry to the bomb shelter. It seems like forever, but finally they get to go out of the bomb shelter. The next day it is very smoky, and while their home was fine , Marianne's (Brigitte's best friend) got destroyed by the bomb. Marianne lives in a family of 9, so until they find a home, Marianne is staying with Brigitte's family. But it will be hard hiding their families secret since Marianne will be living with them now.
Angelika finally finishes her work program in Ulm. Shortly after she arrives, Germany lost the war to United Nations. So now the soldiers are coming to invade Germany and get rid of Hitler. While Brigitte's family was reading the leaflets secretly in the night, Marianne heard all of it and packed her bags to go and live with her Uncle. But hopefully she doesn't turn in Brigitte's family and secret to the authorities. Brigitte just happened to be in Angelika's room, minding her own business, when she found 50 stamps in her room. But Angelika never sends anyone mail. Could she be sending out the White Rose leaflets to everyone? Brigitte's family in on thin ice now, because the police know about the White Rose members. And it turns out that Angelika is in the White Rose after all. So just as they were leaving for Switzerland, the police were banging on the door. They dash for the trapdoor, but Papa sacrifices himself to the police, so that Brigitte and Angelika can escape. Angelika and Brigitte are heading towards the train station, but they have to make a quick stop first.
They decide to come up with a plan while they're in the JM clubhouse. But they run into Marianne, she said that she read the last leaflet and she agrees with it, Hitler is bad! They run to the White Rose cellar to duplicate it so they can change other people's minds too. Once they're done, they hand the leaflets to Marianne so she can mail them all across Munchen. Brigitte and Angelika get smuggled to Switzerland safely. They have been staying at Uncle Otto's for 2 years now. Finally, Papa comes to Uncle Otto's to find the girls. After hiding out for months, Hitler finally surrenders himself and his country. Brigitte and her family can now live in peace!
The message of the story is that even if times get rough, you can't give up. Brigitte and Angelika risked their lives for their country, but they had to do, what they had to do.
Text-Self: Brigitte and Angelika had to leave their home, and that is kind of like moving. And my family is moving.
Text-Text: This book reminds me of, "Number The Stars". It reminds me of that book because Brigitte's family had to be smuggled to Switzerland, just like when Ellen's family had to leave because they were being chased.
Text-World: Right now, Russia is bombing Ukraine, just like when Germany was bombing Russia and England in my book.
Text-Media: There have been many documentaries on how the White Rose made a big impact on people's minds in WW2.
I absolutely loved this book! It was descriptive, informing, and it was fun to read. I would rate it a 9.5/10. The reason I chose this book, was because Mrs.Daviduck needed someone to test it out.
If you like a fun, but sad adventurous story, this would be perfect for you. It has it's ups and it's downs, but it's still one of the best stories that I've ever read!.
This book is written in first person, which is Brigitte. She was telling the story in her view. She would also share her thoughts and conversations as if it was her diary.
The White Rose was real, and yes, the 7 members of the White Rose died. But they died standing up for what was right. There was 6 leaflets, totaling around 15 000 copies that were spread all over Germany. The White Rose had a big impact on Germany in WW2. And because of them, Hitler was stopped and everyone lived happily ever after!
