The gold rush started in 1872 when James Mulligan discovered gold at Palmer River, north of Cairns. Thousands flocked to the area in search of gold. The goldfield was harsh and remote. According to Peter Worthington, a miner on the goldfields in 1876, “We have to overcome disease, isolation, lack of supplies, tropical heat, monsoonal rains and floods, it is hell”. Over 30,000 people moved to the area around Palmer River and Maytown in the search for gold. Many of these 30,000 people were Chinese and they were treated poorly by many of the other miners at Palmer River. At one stage, Cooktown was the second biggest city in Queensland behind Brisbane. A lot of the ports, roads and railways that were built during the gold rush are still around and in use today.
