History

My father's side has had the last name Gallant for centuries, as the name is defined as being heroic and brave. Some other last names in my father's lineage includes Healy, Hache-Gallant, and Mylnarchuk. My dad's side of the family includes French, English, Polish and Irish descent. My grandfathers side of the family has a lot of recorded history, photos and documents.

Hache-Gallant

History

The Gallant name goes quite far back in French-Canadian history as my ancestors were once called the Hache-Gallants. Though there is more generations, the earliest legally documented member was Michel Hache-Gallant, who was born in 1691 in Beaubassin, Cumberland (now Nova Scotia). In fact, my family is one of the first French settlers to arrive in Canada and establish settlements in Nova Scotia, along with the Hudson Bay Fur Trade Company. I find it very cool that there are people in my family lineage who most likely were part of the first expedition into Canada with Jacques Cartier. The Hache-Gallant family has 10 members known to be born in Beaubassin from 1691 to 1709.

This story is quite important to my family and I. My great grandmother Helena was born in Poland during the time of the fascist Nazi movements within Europe. Of course, Poland was a major victim to the disasters of World War II and the Nazi and Soviet invasions. At the age of 14, my great grandmother was able to escape Poland with her sibling and eventually found refuge in Canada. Unfortunately, the trauma caused by the events she suffered led to PTSD and schizophrenia for almost her entire life. The trauma was so severe she never told anyone stories of her experiences in Poland as a child. I take a lot of pride in my Polish descent as it shows how brave my great grandmother was to be able to escape from such a terrible experience.

My mother's side is quite diverse between my Grandma and Grandpa's lineages. The most notable surnames in the tree includes Whitesel, Frank, and Atkinson. The last name Greenlaw originates from a very old village in Scotland called Greenlaw. The town still exists as we are planning to eventually visit it. My mother's side includes Scottish, Metis, English, and French descent.

Metis Heritage

Delma Atkinson Frank Steele (Metis) in Terrace, BC (1940).

On my grandma's side of the family, there is a lot of Metis descent that is found. My grandmother has told me that some of my ancestors had unfortunately attended residential schools when they were children. It is said our Metis origin most likely comes from the name Laplante in the Red River region. I take a lot of pride in my Metis ancestry, as it was the main reason I chose to discuss Metis self governance in my historical essay. At the moment, my mother, two sisters and grandma has Metis status cards, as I am hoping to acquire mine soon.

My great-great-grandfather George Whitesel and his John Thomas "Jocko" were both Canadian soldiers in World War II. Jocko was deployed from 1942-1945 where he spent 3 years deployed in Great Britain as an airplane mechanic. As well, his sister Helen was also part of the Canadian Air Force. George was most likely not deployed across seas as all of the photos show he was in Victoria during his time of service, but I would imagine he also was part of the Air Force. He spent 5 years in the service from 1940-1945
