Dissertation Workshop Four

Engaging and Informative!

The Introduction

  • The introduction should start with a paragraph that grabs attention and outlines the topic
  • Define key terms
  • outline the sources/methodology - workshop 2
  • discuss the historiography - where does your project sit? What does it add?

Key things to remember

Finishing the Dissertation

  • When editing put distance between yourself and the project
  • Analyse the work like a source
  • Why is this here? is it effective?
  • what is the purpose of the piece?
  • 'Hear' what you have written - does it make sense?
  • Spellcheck is not a substitute for proofreading

Illustrations and Images

  • Embed them in the text
  • Provide a list of illustrations
  • caption box to label them
  • Submit as a pdf and word doc.
  • Engage with the images - they shouldn't just be pretty

Use this to start putting together your list of illustrations

  • Must include:
  • Your name,
  • name of institution,
  • degree programme title and year,
  • course title and course code,
  • title of the dissertation,
  • a statement that the dissertation is the student’s own work,
  • date of submission and signature

  • Take a moment and draft this

  • Dissertation should begin on separate page
  • Each new chapter on separate page
  • The footnotes should start over in each chapter

Checklist

  • Primary source material (unpublished)
  • Primary source material (published)

  • Film and other visual evidence should be in a separate category between unpublished and published.

  • Secondary sources (works which appear after the period): books and articles consulted (these may appear together or separated).

Bibliography

  • You must have submitted a Students Ethics Checklist form to me, including the Ethics UH Protocol Number cHUM/CL/UH/05061
  • You must have asked each of your interviewees to complete a consent form to indicate that they agree to their interviews being used as part of your research
  • The Checklist must be included in your dissertation as an appendix.
  • Consent forms will need to be placed in a secure file arranged with the module leader
