The pay gap- a modern day sexism issue.
The pay gap is the harsh reality of how big sports leagues and cooperations feel about women in sport. Right now in Canada, women make 89 cents for every dollar that a man earns. Convert that to the millions of dollars that sports pay the players and it becomes an astronomical difference. The pay gap goes all the way back to the 1950s where women were discouraged to work and stay home instead. This issue has been going on for almost 75 years yet it's still an active issue today. There is some coverage in the media by smaller broadcasters who are usually women trying to make a difference however it's alot more difficult to bring awarness to a topic if there's no concrete audience who are listening or even wanting to hear it. The majority of media personel and reporters in sport are also men which is further feeding the issue of awarness surrounding the topic. The mentality that if no one speaks about it there's no problem which has proven to be detrimental to women getting the pay and recognition they deserve.
There are multiple factors that contribute to the creation of the pay gap. The main reason however is that womens sports generate less revenue than mens sports do. Now this isn't totally the players or anyone involved with the sports' fault, it falls on the larger cooperations who sponsor and display the media (or lack there of) generating less interest in womens sports which reduces exposure. If womens sports were advertised half as much as mens the outcome of the pay gap would begin to shrink. There are many things that go with the exposure issue to actually reduce the pay gap and make it fair to both genders however, starting the conversation and creating hype around womens sports so that fans from all over can get excited to tune in is definetly a good place to start.
Currently there are mutiple orginizations in and out of the sport world working to reduce the pay gap. Specifically in sport, many orginizations are putting more time and money into advertisment to get the public excited and start the conversation surrounding women in sports. By advertizing to larger audiences, more people will become interested and want to tune in thus giving the company (and the women) more revenue in watch time which ultimately gets returned to the palyer by an increase of salary. Giving girls the same opportunities as boys in sports is extremely important for them to be successful. This means unbiased outlets for women to showcase their skills as men do without getting critisized or ridiculed simply for being a woman. Having an equal playing field to men will help get the hype started around women in sports and hopefully be the push that these women deserve.
The near future for women in sports hold many exciting opportunities which will hopefully help get them out there and receive some recognition. Sexism has been an issue as far back as documented however, moving forward with efforts to help is key. There will always be men who dont believe women should be given the same opportunities or shouldn't be allowed to play proffesionally, and like anything else, there will always be haters. Looking past the hate and overcoming everything put in place to bring girls down is the success many young girls at home who may grow up to be great athletes are looking for. Minimizing the pay gap is just the first step to shift the socieital norm of women not being viewed as athletes or the same level as men.
