Mars -Curiosity mission

Maria Dancheva 10b

Characteristics

Planet profile

  • the fourth planet in our solar system;
  • there are seasons, similar to the ones on Earth;
  • it has no magnetosphere;
  • the atmosphere isn't like Earth's;

Planet

Satellites

Satellites

Crew less spacecrafts have been sent to Mars by the Soviet Union, the United States, Europe, and India to study the planet's surface, climate, and geology.

Curiosity mission

Goals:

  • investigation of the climate and geology;
  • if the planet ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life;
  • planetary habitability studies in preparation for human explorations;

curiosity mission

Rover

curiosity rover

Curiosity has a mass of 899 kg including 80 kg of scientific instruments. The rover is 2.9 m long by 2.7 m wide by 2.2 m in height.

Gale on Mars

How it works

Power source:

  • Curiosity is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator;
  • Radioisotope power systems;

Communications

Communication

  • Signals between Earth and Mars take an average of 14 minutes, 6 seconds;
  • Curiosity can communicate with Earth directly at speeds up to 32 kbit/s;

Alpha particles

Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer

The APXS instrument irradiates samples with alpha particles and maps the spectra of X-rays that are re-emitted for determining the elemental composition of samples.

Notes

Heat rejection system

The thermal system warms the rover for most of the Martian year.

The thermal system does so in several ways:

  • passively, through the dissipation to internal components;
  • by electrical heaters strategically placed on key components;
  • by using the rover heat rejection system;
