What defines a Contingency shaped behavior?
What does it look like?
A contingency shaped behavior is the result of directly coming into contact with the consequences of your behavior
Rule-Governed Behavior
Rule Governed Behavior
Rule governed behavior is unique in that the learner doesn't have to come into contact with the consequence of the rule in order to follow the behavior
Think of things like "rules of the road," or "rules at the library," etc.
We'll talk more applied examples later, but think of this in terms of rules that you follow, but you've never gotten in trouble for
Contingency shaped vs. Rule Governed
Rule governed Behavior
Both
Contingency Shaped Behavior
Both involve consequences of your actions
Does not HAVE to come into contact with the consequence
The learner has to come into contact with the consequence
Both are influenced by learning
Applied Examples
These are contingencies/rules you might see in center
Applied Examples
Manding

Coping Strategies
Coping Strategies
Could be considered a rule or a contingency depending on the learner
SRT
SRT/Transition Readiness
Both rule-governed AND contingency shaped behaviors can be used in this setting-- like having magic marbles, rules about getting out of your seat, using a hall pass, etc.
Schedules
Could also be both-- can you think of a time when a schedule would function as a rule or a contingency?
Tickets!
I've never gotten a ticket, so my behavior would be rule governed (somewhat, I definitely don't always drive the speed limit)
