Air & Space Superiority
SrA Cannon
- The most familiar Air Force mission, air superiority, includes establishing and maintaining control of the skies over conflict areas, allowing U.S. forces to operate at the times and places of their choosing
- The Air Superiority includes establishing and maintaining control of the skies over conflict areas, allowing U.S. forces to operate at the times and places of their choosing.
- No enemy aircraft has killed U.S. ground troops since 1953.
- Space superiority involves securing U.S. space assets and the ability to maintain the navigational, communications, reconnaissance, and other capabilities U.S. space platforms provide.
- The United States remains the world’s largest military spender by far, with its $877 billion representing 39% of global military spending.
- U.S Air Force has almost 12,000 aircraft vs Russia Air Force totaling a little over 6,000 aircraft. U.S air force more aircraft overall, actually more than double the amount of Russia. Russia has more bombers aircrafts than the US but their bombers are old and cheap compared to the US. The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit bomber cost about 2 billion dollars whereas the Russian Tupolev 160 is about $40 million dollars
- US really flexes its muscles by having not only more but also more expensive jet fighters than Russia has.
- The fact that the USAF has more expensive and at the same time almost the double amount of jets than Russia has, could explain why the United State’s military budget is so comparatively high.
- The Russian air force has approximately 140 000 persons involved at the moment, while the USAF has almost 700 000!
Cyber Space Enterprise
- How does the US government prevent cyber attacks?
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) works with other federal agencies to conduct high-impact criminal investigations to disrupt and defeat cyber criminals, prioritize the recruitment and training of technical experts, develop standardized methods, and broadly share cyber response best practices and tools.
- The White House released the new US National Cybersecurity Strategy in March 2023.
- The framework seeks to protect critical infrastructure, including hospitals and clean energy facilities, from cyberthreats.
- It also aims to increase collaboration with international coalitions and partnerships to counter threats to the digital ecosystem
Cyber Space Enterprise
Cyber Space Enterprise Cont.
- Earlier this month, President Joe Biden released a new National Cybersecurity Strategy, which outlines steps the government is taking to secure cyberspace and build a resilient digital ecosystem that is easier to defend than attack — and that is open and safe for all
- Five of the points that are made in the “ National Cybersecurity Strategy” are: Defend Critical Infrastructure, Disrupt and Dismantle Threat Actors, Shape Market Forces to Drive Security and Resilience, Invest in a Resilient Future, Forge International Partnerships to Pursue Shared Goals
1. Defend critical infrastructure
2. Disrupt and dismantle threat actors
3. Shape market forces to drive security and resilience
4. Invest in a resilient future
5. Forge international partnerships to pursue shared goals
Command & Control
- What is Command and Control?
- Total Flexibilty
- How does the U.S employ command and control over Russia?
- Between nuclear weapons and cyberspace.
SrA
Walton
Nuclear Enterprise
- Nuclear weapons continue to play a very important role in U.S.-Russian relations.
- Air force has just implemented the largest nuclear command and control upgrade in 30 years due to the Russia and Ukraine war.
- Given the potential for conflict between NATO and Russia, these factors mean that nuclear weapons are receiving increasing attention in Alliance capitals, and this attention is only likely to grow.
Rapid Global Mobility
SrA Yellowhair
- American power that can be projected quickly to anywhere on the face of the earth as a result of the Air Force’s capability.”
- “Delivering essential equipment and personnel for missions ranging from major combat to humanitarian relief operations around the world.”
- ”The most effective and efficient way to move people and equipment.”
- ”Continue to improve our aeromedical evacuation, precision airdrop, and in-flight refueling capabilities for use in contested environments.”
- AMC supported United States European Command efforts to supply Ukraine, after Russia invaded the country. Thus far, 14 missions, transporting 231 short tons, have been accomplished toward that endeavor.
Explain the Unity of Efforts as it explains to addresing conflicts in Russia?
Joint Forces:
Unity of Efforts
- Unity of Efforts refer to coordination and cooperation toward common objectives, even if the participants are not necessarily part of the same command or organization, which is the product of successful unified action. Ex. DoD or NATO
- Most U.S. military branches have a common mission to support foreign nations, whether it be for humanitarian relief or major combat operations.
- Joint coalition forces utilize Rapid Global Mobility by uniting together to aid Ukraine in the invasion of Russia. Although US Troops are not able to step on Ukraine soil, we can supply logistics and medical aid via air power.
The Risks involved during an Adversarial & Non-Adversarial Crisis Response
Joint Forces: Adversarial & Non-Adversarial Crisis Response
- Adversarial outcome (what happens if our actions as a Joint Forced Leads to war? How does this impact RGM?) :
- Restrict airspace that prevent life saving aid and resources
- The Global Economy
- Not trusting and relying on the team to execute the mission
- War Reparations
- Non-adversarial (what happens if we execute our mission without getting confrontational?):
- Peace
- Looked up to to make future major decisions
- Financial Reparations
Tactical Actions that have been used to Counter & Deter Potential Threats
Joint Forces: Tactical Actions Against Potential Threats
- Patience, leadership had to think strategically. To not only think about one outcome but multiple consequences to one another's action. As a Joint Force we have to be inclusive.
- Example: 3,000 Soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division were ordered to deploy to Poland
Suggested Tactical Alternatives
Joint Forces: Suggested Tactical Alternatives
What would happen if the U.S. assisted with with Ukraine in hand in hand combat against the Russian Invasion?
- The moment the US intervenes in the Ukraine Russia war, we allow China to step in, leading to the next world war.
Tactical Actions we would suggest
- Avoiding WWIII was the strategic solution that the Joint Forces could agree on and another Tactic action our group would suggest would getting the whole NATO alliance involved
Global Strike & ISR
SrA Powers
- Global Strike: Any Target, Any Time
- Global strike includes the nuclear deterrent force. Two legs of the nuclear triad—bombers and land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs)—are Air Force missions.
- Russia: Global Strike Command practicing strategic deterrence by kicking off a series of engagements and training missions by sending bombers and their crews to the Western Pacific, Europe and the Arctic. Russia's response to the Pentagaon Defense Review back in 2001.
- Intelligence, Surveillance, & Reconaissance
- ISR is gathering information, monitoring current or potential adversaries, and providing real-time data to forces in combat is a continuous and growing mission
- Russia: Conducting ISR U.S Military has deployed extensive ISR to NATO Allied neighbors to monitor developments
Global Strike: DoD Defense Priortity
National Defense Strategy: Global Strike
- Dod Defense Priority (Global Strike): Defending the homeland, against multi domain threat posed by Russia
- Nuclear Deterrent Force
ISR DoD Defense Priority
National Defense Strategy: ISR
- DoD Defense Priority (ISR): Deterring strategic attacks against the US, Allies & partners
- Strategic Reconaissance & Surveillance
Instruments of National Power
- The instruments of national power are Diplomatic, Informational, Military, and Economic (DIME).
- DIME is the method used to describe the tool set of national power at the highest levels of strategic guidance, e.g., the Presidential National Security Strategy.
- Diplomatic
- Informational
- Military
- Economic
