Regions

Regions

Region

Italy has twenty regions.

The most important city of the region is the regional capital.

Regions can make law on a variety of topics: such as turism, urban planning, health, education. These laws cannot conflict with national legislation.

The President of the Region, called Governor, leads the Regional Council. The Regional Council is elected by the citizens.

Some regions have a special status and more autonomy: Valle d'Aosta, Trentino Alto-Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sicily and Sardinia.

Provinces and Metropolitan Cities

Regions are divided in Provinces.

Provinces regulate mainly the building and maintenance of schools and streets.

Some provinces have become metropolitan cities, that is big cities and the small towns near-by.

Town (Municipality)

In Italy there are more than 8000 towns.

Sometimes a municipality is formed by more little villages.

Every five years the citizens elect a Mayor and a Town Council. The municipality provides social services, takes care of public buildings (schools, sport centers).

Autonomy

The region Trentino-Alto Adige is comprised by two autonomous provinces: the Provincia Autonoma di Trento and the Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano.

Trentino-Alto Adige was annexed to Italy after World War I.

After World War II Italy and Austria made a pact in order to protect the German minority in Südtirol.

In 1972 the Second Statute of Autonomy granted more autonomy to Südtirol after very tense negotiations and many terrorist attacks.

Italian geography

Italy is a country in Southern Europe, located on a peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea.

Italy shares borders with six countries: France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, the Republic of San Marino and the Vatican City State.

Italy is easy to see in a map, because it is shaped like a boot. It is a popular country for its many ports and sandy beaches.

Italy has two bigger island: Sicily and Sardinia and many smaller island such as Capri, Ischia and Elba.

The Alps and the Apennines are the two main mountain ranges. In the North, the mountain range of the Alps separates Italy from the other European countries: France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

The highest mountains of Italy are in the Alps Range. The Dolomites are part of the Alps and the peaks are above 3000m.

There are many lakes in northern Italy, then in the centre the landscape flattens and this area is called the Po Valley.

The Apennines mountain range run all the way down the boot and separate the eastern and the western regions of Italy.

There are also active volcanoes: Vesuvius near Neaples, Etna in Sicily and Stromboli near the sicilian coast.

Italy's largest island is Sicily. This island is also the largest in the Mediterranean Sea.

The biggest city of the country is Rome.

The highest peak is Monte Bianco (4807m).

The longest river is the Po River (652km) in northern Italy.

Lake Garda is the largest lake and it is located in northern Italy. It is famous for its warm climate and winds that attract many surfers.

The Etna is the most active volcano in Europe.

The Po Valley's biggest cities include Milan, Modena, Turin and Verona.

Milan is the main industrial center of Italy and it is one of the world's fashion capital.

Famous festivals are celebrated every year: Carnival in Venice, the Palio in Siena (horse race), soccer matches.
