Climate Change

Human Toxicity Is Choking Our Planet

Introduction

Introduction

  • Climate change is the effect greenhouse gases have on our climate (See Subtopic)
  • You might have heard about the increasing temperatures on our planet. This is climate change.
  • It is important to know about this so we can stop erratic weather and protect our planet.
  • This climate change is caused by humans and so it is our responsibility to control it.

Greenhouse Gases

The list of greenhouses gases that heat up our planet are:

  • Carbon dioxide,
  • methane,
  • nitrous oxide,
  • hydro-fluorocarbons
  • per-fluorocarbons
  • nitrogen trifluoride
  • sulfur hexafluoride

Most of these are produced by human industrialization.

Countries Affecting the Climate

  • In this topic, we will talk about human effect on climate change categorized by country. We will feature 3 countries and their impact:
  • United States of America
  • Russia
  • United Kingdom
  • There are many reasons for these impacts on the climate. Cows producing methane and factories producing carbon dioxide are among the reasons.
  • See subtopic 2 for USA's impact, Subtopic 3 for Russia and 4 for the
  • United Kingdom. I chose these countries because together they make up over 20% of greenhouse gas emissions.

USA's Impact

Subtopic 2:

USA's Impact

  • The Us has been excessively releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere on an incline since 1970. Co2 emissions have increased by 90% between 1970 and 2011.
  • This doesn't include the other greenhouse gases written about. This is thanks to our overuse of land and industrial processes. This produces 27% of the emissions.
  • The U.S. is the second most greenhouse emitting country completely outranking the entirety of the European Union.
  • Although the US has decreased carbon emissions by 20% since 2007 in recent years, and only amounting to about 15% of greenhouse gases, there is more to the story.
  • Historically US has released well over 400 tonnes of Co2 into the atmosphere leveling off as the least carbon neutral country in history.

Russia's Impact

Subtopic 3:

Russia's Impact

  • Russia produces almost as much carbon dioxide as India with about 10% as many citizens. (5% of global emissions)
  • Russia is the 4th highest carbon emitter today and they are experiencing the most heat.
  • Russia is warming up 2.5 times quicker than other places on Planet Earth. Forest fires burn through areas the size of Greece.
  • In 2020, they emitted 1/3 more carbon dioxide than the year before.
  • When the "permafrost" that covers much of Russia's area melts, diesel may spill into the oceans and cause more damage.
  • Russia's situation is in it's own hands.

UK's Impact On the Climate

  • the UK was one of the first countries to industrialize and use coal in the world. As such, they have had a high carbon footprint through history.
  • If we categorize carbon emissions by emissions per capita (or unit of wealth) we see that the UK is the world's highest emitter.
  • Today, the UK emits more carbon dioxide than tons of other countries.
  • 1% of global emissions today may seem innocent but historically, the UK has emitted over 75 billion tons.
  • And from another angle, the UK has been the highest emitter for 150+ years from 1750 to the 1900s.

The UK's Impact

Promoting The Planet

  • One way to help the planet is by taking action on the problem by legislating new laws to limit greenhouse gas emissions and dangerous carbon growth.
  • We can also invest in new carbon free technologies.
  • Many people say that it is up to the politicians what happens next but we can help too. If pressure is put on governments for change, then they might be forced to do so. (We can write letters, emails or persuasive speeches to senators, governors or other members of government.)
  • We can also pursue careers in carbon neutrality to help the planet.
  • Another way to help is to donate to the right places. A little bit of funding can go a long way.
  • We can also limit energy usage and provide ourselves with carbon neutral sources like solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, and even nuclear energy. (It is not completely carbon neutral but better than fossil fuels.)

Inventing The Future

  • If I could make one invention to aid the slow of climate change it would be a genetically modified tree.
  • This tree, would require massive amounts of sunlight and Co2 to sustain itself but a minimal amount of water. This way it can survive in arid regions.
  • It would also create lots of oxygen as a waste product for us to breathe
  • It would have weak wood and no fruit, so as to discourage animals or people from destroying it for resources or food.
  • The energy that is conserved by this lack of self-care would be used to create lots of seeds to reproduce quickly and help the environment more.
  • This extra energy would also be used to send nutrients to other trees in need faster. this would keep the trees in the forest alive longer.
  • The only fault to this invention would be that if humans keep burning forests, the weak wood of the tree wouldn't be able to sustain itself and would die. So the only thing nececssary for humans to do is to decrease land hunger.
