Importance:
Teachers use this method to evaluate the effectiveness of their lesson. It is important to gauge the overall class understanding and compare it to the individual understanding of each student.
Check for Understanding Strategies
3 Resources to Explore Different Strategies and Examine Effectiveness of Topic:
- The National Institute for Excellence in Teaching Aspiring Teacher Rubric
- "8 Quick Checks for Understanding" by Jay McTighe
- "Dipstick: Efficient Ways to Check for Understanding" by Todd Finley
Definition:
The method of checking for understanding is used by teachers to informally assess the students' comprehension on the information presented within the lesson.
Common Strategies
The NIET Aspiring Teacher Rubric
- Visual representations
- Teach to others
- Apply processes via various methods
- Explain/ summarize

TEL510: Instructional Design, Planning, and Assessment
September 4, 2022
- This resource helps identify a "set of performance indicators to be used with teacher candidates to define effective instruction"
- 1 of the 12 indicators is Assessment
- many of the descriptors within the indicator align with the concept of checking for understanding
- proves necessity of checking for understanding within a lesson and teacher effectiveness
Types of Visual Strategies:
Types of Explanation and Summarization Strategies:
- "create a collage around the lesson's themes" (Finley, p. 4)
- "Use a comic book creation tool like Bitstrips to represent understanding" (Finley, p. 5)
- "Describe the key features of _________ in a visually and textually compelling pamphlet" (Finley, p. 6)
- "Color cards" used to show understandiing by holding up different colors, i.e. red = help. (Finley, p. 6)
Evidence of an Effective Teacher via Qualities Implying a Check for Understanding Took Place:
- "prepare a weekly letter to your teacher (or parents) summarizing something that yolu now understand as a result of your learning" (McTighe)
- "Compose a tweet... answering the question: What is the big idea that you have learned about______?" (McTighe)
- Have studetnts create analogies and ask "students to explain their analogies" (McTighe)
-"measure student performance through both formative and summative types and in more than two ways" (NIET Aspiring Teacher Rubric, p. 5)
-It is important to check for their knowledge in different types of assessments.
-"always include intentional use of both formal and informal methods of measuring student progress" (NIET Aspiring Teacher Rubric, p. 5)
- It is important to intentionally assess student progress by checking for understanding.
Why?
- Students have the ability to demonstrate their newfound knowledge and become aware of weaknesses
- Teachers can gauge weak spots and prepare to revisit topics that students struggle with
- Students feel comfortable displaying knowledge through different methods
- Effective teachers need to continually check before moving onto new content to ensure maximim learning
Summarization
How to Apply for Student Diversity
Applications of Topic for Diversity and Equity
- allows students to demonstrate knowledge creatively since some learners can more easily use visuals
- enables individuals to particpate to their comfort level
- students will feel seen and heard
- allows teachers to interact with students on a more individualized level
- teacher can enact multiple methods in one class period to accomodate for more students
How I Will Use the Topic in a Future Lesson
Applications for Future Lesson Plan
- I intend to use the aspect of students teaching their peers in a future lesson. I would like to have students complete a problem and then walk their neighbors through how they got a solution.
- I would like to give the students the opportunity to create a visual representation like a pamphlet, diagram, or story to show their knowledge.
- I would like to use signaling like thumbs up/down/middle to show how they feel about the content.
