How to preserve natural resources.

Emely Dotel, Giancarlo Rosario and Paula Beato.

Science Project, 7A, Mi-El Christian School.

What are natural resources?

Natural resources: are materials or substances occurring in nature which can be exploited for economic gain. There are two types of natural resources:

WHAT?

Renewable and non-renewable resources:

Renewable resources are replenished naturally and over relatively short periods of time. Nonrenewable resources take long time to be replenished.

Why should I care about natural resources?

WHY?

Natural resources are a part of every human's everyday life. Without natural resources humans would not survive. Power plants are a big part of a human's life but it uses natural resources that will eventually deplete. Power plants run on coal and coal is a natural resource.

Some ignore their importance because we still

have enough, but, talking about

nonrenewable resource, we will

indeed run out of them.

How can I preserve natural resources?

Now that you know what natural resources are and why are they important, its time to learn how to take care of them.

HOW?

Step 1. Reduce the water use.

Step 1.

According to Save the Water, the average American uses 2,000 gallons of water every day, while the average family in Africa uses only 5 gallons of water each day. The conserving

of water can make a big

difference.

The importance of water.

Importance.

Water is the most abundant natural resource in the world. In fact, it covers up to 70.9 percent of the Earth’s surface. However, it is important to note that only about 3 percent of water is fresh and out of this, only about less than 1 percent is available for direct human use. It is therefore important to manage water efficiently. Management of water is achieved by a change in lifestyle. Using only the amount of water you require and not leaving taps running will

go a long way in conserving water.

Ways to save water.

Ways.

  • Only wash full loads of laundry.
  • Fill a bucket while showering and use it to water plants.
  • Run the dishwasher only when full.
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Harvest rainwater.
  • Install water-efficient appliances and shower heads.

Step 2. Reduce energy waste.

Step 2.

There are many different ways to reduce your household’s energy use, ranging from simple behavioral adjustments to extensive home improvements. The two major motives for conserving energy are to save on utility bills and protect the

environment.

The importance of energy.

Importance.

The by-products of power plants can have a negative impact on the environment and human health. Limiting your family’s electricity use can make a big difference, while also saving you money. Here’s a few ways you can conserve

electricity at home.

Ways to save energy.

Ways.

  • Unplug chargers and appliances when not in use.
  • Open your windows instead of running the A/C.
  • Close shades during sunny hours.
  • Turn lights off before leaving your home.
  • Install timers or motion detectors on indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • Replace your lightbulbs with LEDs.

Step 3. Reduce air pollution.

Step 3.

Every time we drive to school, use our heater or air conditioner, clean our windows, or even style our hair, we make choices that affect air pollution. These steps, as well as many

others, are things we all can

do to help reduce air pollution.

The importance of reducing air pollution.

Importance.

Air pollution causes damage to crops, animals, forests, and bodies of water. It also contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the sun's UV rays.

Ways to reduce air pollution.

Ways.

  • Limit driving by carpooling, using public transportation, biking and walking.
  • Keep your automobile well tuned and maintained. Changing the oil and filters, and checking tire pressure and wheel alignment.
  • Use electric or hand-powered lawn care equipment.
  • Be careful not to spill gasoline when filling up your car or gasoline powered lawn and garden equipment.
  • Choose environmentally friendly cleaners.
  • Use water-based or solvent free paints whenever possible and buy products that say "low VOC".
  • Seal containers of household cleaners, workshop chemicals and solvents, and garden chemicals to prevent volatile organic compounds from evaporating into the air.

Step 4. Reduce waste.

While the abstract idea of reducing one’s waste can be overwhelming, a great place to start is within the comfort of your own home.

Little changes such as switching to cloth bags instead of plastic ones or making a concerted effort to recycle cans and bottles can make a big difference in your waste output.

Step 4.

The importance of reducing waste.

Importance.

Recycling is very important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste.

Ways to reduce waste

Ways.

  • Get to know the rules of recycling.
  • Ditch the plastic bags.
  • Make a meal plan.
  • Start relying on reusable containers.
  • Start composting.
  • Learn to repair rather than discard.
  • Cancel unnecessary mail.
  • Stop using disposable plates.

Bible integration.

BIBLE INTEGRATION.

Numbers 35:33

"You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it."
