Political Impacts on Global Tourism

By Mikaela Trimmer & Georgiana Craddock

OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

Governments of all levels and of all political persuasions have recognised that while tourism is essentially only a private sector activity, it has a huge impact on local communities, regional and national economies and international relationships that require government involvment. A government who is interested in promoting tourism to its nation, invloves the role of planning in the economy, the breadth of its economy and its dependence on the accumulated impact of development on the physical and cultural environment.

Economic Impact

Economic Impacts

Whatever the extent of the government's involvement profoundly influences the economic climate in which tourism operates.

Governments largely determine expenditure on the infrastructure that travellers utilise, such as roads, railways and airports.

Government Spending

Impacts on Business

Political factors directly affect the business side of tourism. Generally this occurs through labour regulation, land zoning and consumer protection. Governments are beginning to formulate national strategies for tourist development or incorporating tourism into broader development policies

In western democracies, the government's principal role in tourism is to foster the development of an environment in which the industry can best prosper, consistent with its broad, economic, social and environmental considerations. This invloves promoting the development of a dynamic and competitive industry that contributes to economic well-being, an enhanced quality of life and a substantial natural and cultural heritage.

Government's Role

CASE STUDY

Case Study - America's Tourism Industry since Donald Trump

What has Donald done?!

Donald J. Trump was elected into the office of the President of the United States of America on 20th January, 2017. Following his inauguration he wasted no time in trying to bar people from certain Muslim-majority countries from entering America. After this, he promised to build a wall between the border of the US and Mexico, to stop Mexican immigrants from coming into the country. Subsequently, the nation's once stable tourism industry shuddered. Thus began the what became quickly known worldwide as the "Trump Slump". Within months, travel firms such as 'Kayak' and 'Hopper' reported that fewer people were searching for flights to America. Along with this, the country was getting terrible worldwide press, further turning visitors away from a country that seemed to be rocking in trouble. The index of the U.S Travel Association declined most in February and March of 2017 just as Trump's 'travel ban' was at its height. In the ensuing year since Trump's induction into the role of Presidency, there have been many attempts at trying to win back the attention of the global industry of tourism to visit America, however it has proven to be a tough industry to conquer since the actions of Mr. Trump have scared many tourists away. The U.S Travel Association says there are still levers the president can use to put America back on the map of global tourism. This includes; backing the "Brand USA" which is the country's tourism marketing organisation. They have suggested that America should take down the 'laptop ban' and the need to apply for so many visas, so as to appeal to the international tourism market.

How Tourism to Australia is impacted politically

HOW IS AUSTRALIA AFFECTED?

Australia relies heavily on tourism to contribute to its state and national economies. Australia's built and natural environment is a major drawdcard for international tourists, however, in the recent years, tourism has been on the decline as a direct result of Australian Politics. Now, Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has done nothing quite as dramatic as US President Donald Trump, in regards to tourism but the focus of the Australian economy has shifted away from the important fact that tourism could contribute more than half of the annual income into the national economy. Along with this, the high price of the Australian Dollar has turned many people off from visiting Australia. In order for the tourism industry to continue to grow and flourish in Australia, the government needs to pay more attention to what it provides to the economy, and focus on maintaining healthy international relationships with other countries. Basically, if the Australian government do the exact opposite of what Mr Trump has done... we should be good to go in regards to having an awesome tourism industry.
