My target audience for this project was young adults from the ages of 16-25, this is because of the explicit language and content in the rnb genre.
The genre appealed to both men and women, however I leaned more towards attracting females as alternative rnb has a softer, more indie touch to it.
The general ethnicities when it comes to rnb music are African Americans, however this spectrum is beginning to widen especially in the last 2 years as rnb music is starting to become millennials favourite sound. I appealed to this audience by shooting young models, all brunette and physically attractive.

Camera used: Nikon D3400
Settings: Manual
The shot taken was a medium close up, this allows the audience to view the models face aswell as his clothing. This shot was easy to work with as I had enough to fit in frame as opposed to making sure I had all of him in a long shot.
The close up enables us to view the models expression (NVC slide) which is stern and intimidating. The neutral camera angle allows mise en scene to assert dominance on the image as the audience is drawn to the colours, costume, expressions etc.
This also follows the rnb magazine conventions as majority of magazines had this angle and camera shot.
The layout on the cover page is created as the camera angle allowed the model to be central, therefore I could put all the coverlines around him without difficulty of blocking something important in the image.
The masthead is behind his head, enough to actually be able to read what it says. The main coverline is ontop of his coat which is acceptable as none of the colours clash or make it hard to read what the coverline says.
The barcode was placed vertically instead of horizontally to give the magazine a more unique look and also fill up the space where the coverlines would have continued.
The shots taken were mid shots and a long shot. The mid shots allow the artist/model's expression to be shown along with their clothing. The long shot allows a story to be told behind the image as the reader can see the desert as well as footprints leading up to the subject in the center of the image. These shots are effective as they show a different range of stories and locations for the model's.
This also follows the rnb magazine conventions as majority of magazines have these angles and camera shots.
The shot taken for this is a medium close up. This allows the model's (Zike) full outfit to be shown as he is sitting down and it also allows the pug to be shown in between his legs.
The layout of this image on the page was over the entire left hand side, as that is a convention of double page spreads.
The fonts used across all the pages were bold and large, the colours used were opaque to make them stand out.
My favourite font to use was the simplistic Arial black and Padaloma - I feel these fonts reach an audience as they are easy to read and don't require extra attention to understand what is written. This way the attention can be diverted to the content of the magazine easily. For my contents page, I used a combination of Arial Black and Baskerville Old. This gives a classy look and I thought it was a change from the same style of fonts.
For the quotation on the double page spread, I used Promova, and the body text was minion pro just so I did not have the same look across all pages.
Mise-en-scène "placing on stage" is an expression used to describe the design aspect of a theatre or film production, which essentially means "visual theme" or "telling a story"—both in visually artful ways through storyboarding, cinematography and stage design, and in poetically artful ways through direction.
It is important as what is put in or left our can make a big difference to the signals we, the audience, recieve about what sort of media it is and how we are supposed to feel at that point.
The settings chosen for my cover page did not matter as there was a black backdrop. This engages the audience as the attention is diverted to the main model. As for the contents page, a variety of settings were used in each image to give a diverse look to the magazine, this is important as it appears that the artists are not all in one place. I think using more women and one man attracts male and female audiences. And for the double page, my model was on a bench in a garden view with a pug between his legs

For my cover photo, costume was very effective as it shapes the artist. Although I did not use big chains and jewelry as initially planned, I replaced it with a large fut coat and bandana. This is appealing for my audience as it is not an overwhelming image of wealth, instead it is more subtle.
The contents page included more of a range, distressed jeans and demin jackets fit the genre perfectly as well as the current trends and styles. For the girls, I incorporated jewelry and sunglasses to give a variety of costume, and makeup was kept to a minimal.
My double page image was also simple as the attention was drawn to the pug, therefore I made my model wear simple jeans and an interesting shirt.
NVC is one of the most important aspects to any image; it shapes the audiences opinion on the subject. For example in my cover image, the seriousness and monotone expression gives my model an intimidating aura, whereas the soft expression on the models face on my contents page gives a more comforting look. This gives the audience an idea of the type of music those artists produce. The image of the man in the desert does not show his face, however his cool and casual pose gives hima laid back look. In my double page spread, the model is showing a hand sign that is known as the shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", it is a guesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture. Although the singer has nothing to do with Hawaii or surfing, the positive guesture softens his previously intimidating expression.

The lighting in this image is bright, initially the photo was a little dim as we were using natural lighting. However with the light box and editing I brightened the image giving the model an angelic look. The use of yellows opposes and stands out against the darkness of the black and blue. This appeals to my audience as the neutral colours give a relaxed appearance, similar to the music, yet the yellows can connote happiness and the up beat aspects to the genre,
The contents page is the opposite of the cover page, I used a baby blue to match the colour of the sky, and red to match the colour of the artwork behind my model Hana. I did not use a true black colour, instead a dark grey to give the page a softer look.
The double page also has a colour scheme of red and black, with a white background. Red and black are opposing colours which compliment each other on the page.
The Purpose of Publishing a Magazine
While newspapers contain straightforward news, magazines expound more on selected stories, going a step further in enlightening the reader. Most newspapers contain information for the general audience. However, individual magazines focus on specific aspects of life such as parenting, lifestyle, hairdressing, fashion, business, travel and music.
Like a television series, some magazines run stories in one edition and continue them in the next one, encouraging their ardent readers to buy successive editions. Many readers buy magazines to know what their favorite celebrities have been up to. There are women’s magazines, men’s magazines and those that target teenagers. With the development of the Internet, many traditional magazines have online versions, commonly referred to as e-zines. As magazines have more pictures than newspapers, people often read them to be entertained while gaining information at the same time.
the publishing company I would choose to distribute my magazine on is Time Inc Uk https://www.timeincuk.com/brands/
I feel this company would be suitable as there are not many music magazines, only the NME as their highest brand, therefore Pump would not have so much competition compared to other distribution companies where it is full of music magazines. This way, it is easier for Pump to enter the market as a new RnB magazine, and it would also offer something unique to the company
I think my magazine would be most suited to be published in high street book stores, such as WH Smiths, as well as airports, music stores etc. Though as the world is drastically shifting to online stores, I would want my magazine to be found on its own website, which can be advertised via social media such as Instagram. Concerts and gigs would allow the artists to promote the magazine through sponserships as well as interviews, music videos etc.
