Employment Opportunities

Polymer Engineer

A polymer engineer usually works in rubber formulation, creating and testing new rubber compounds. Polymer engineers also analyze new rubber base polymers, fillers, curatives, and protectants.

R&D Engineer

An R&D engineer performs research and development. They use research theories, principles and models to conduct various experiments, create new products, and redesign old products. Their overall goal is to improve their company’s technologies and contribute to the overall industry.

Engineering Supervisor

The engineering supervisor is responsible for overseeing operations in the engineering department. They oversee operation budgets, project goals, specifications, and regulations. They also make sure that their equipment is always running properly by keeping up with tasks like parts procurement, calibration, and permit maintenance.

Quality Control Supervisor

Quality control supervisors are responsible for all aspects of quality control in an organization. This means supervising the quality control department and ensuring that their team follows all the rules for handling quality control issues.

Rubber Tapper

They slice a groove into the bark of the tree with a hooked knife and peel back the bark. The latex from the tree is dripped into a cup and add ammonia into the substance to prevent from hardening.

Testing

  • After everything is finished all the balls are tested to see if they meet expectations. The basketball is dropped from 72 inches, and it must return up to 52 to 56 inches to be fit for commercial use.
  • After that, some small details like decals and other graphics are checked. Also, any glue leftovers are removed.A packaged basketball ready to be sent to a retailer.
  • After the testing phase, the balls are usually packaged in plastic bags or cardboard boxes and sent out to distributors.

Vocabulary

  • Ethylene - It is a colourless, flammable gas having a sweet taste and odour.
  • Protectants - A substance that provides protection
  • Specifications - An act of describing or identifying something precisely or of stating a precise requirement.
  • Calibration - The process of configuring an instrument to provide a result for a sample within an acceptable range

Key Takeaways

The production and distribution of basketballs involve precision, innovation, and collaboration across various sectors. The economic impact of sports equipment manufacturing extends beyond the game, influencing global economies and job markets.

Creating the inner bladder

Rubber is melted, after it is cured, into flat panels and formed into a ball shape, a small hole is then poked into the ball so it can be inflated, The bladder is inflated and kept inflated for 24 hours to cure.

Manufacturing Process

  • When starting this process it all comes back to this. The first step is to supply and manufacturing the rubber. It starts with the Rubber Tapper. This is one of the many jobs involed in this process. They slice a groove into the bark of the Amazonian rubber tree, the main source of latex, with a hooked knife and peel back the bark. The latex from the tree starts to be dripped into a cup and then ammonia is added into the substance to prevent from hardening. After that it is run through rollers to prevent air bubbles, next it is hung for many days to dry/cure. Then it is ready for processing.

Shaping the interior

  • Since the bladder is not perfectly round at this point a polyester; polyester is a polymer primarily composed of compounds. Most synthetic and some plant-based polyester fibers are made from ethylene, which is a whole group of petroleum that can also be derived from other sources, thread is wrapped around the bladder giving that spherical shape we all know and love. This also helps k it not become mishaped.

Outside Layer

Leather , a strong, flexible and durable material obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides, from a cow, horse, pig, ect is rolled into a thin sheet. The material is then cut into 6 different football-like segments and left to cure. It is then stitched onto the ball we made earlier. Then it is also set to cure. After it is all finished all of the decals are put onto the ball such as logos, brands, and ect. These are normally stickers that glue themselves to the ball.
