Conditions: You are a member of a mounted or dismounted platoon in a field environment and must use visual signals to communicate.
Standards: Communicate with other Soldiers and vehicle crews using visual signaling techniques.
Safety Risk: Low
-Used to transmit "planned messages" rapidly over short distances
-Most common types include:
arm-and-hand
flag
chemical light sticks or flash lights
pyrotechnic
ground to air signals
Soldiers are not limited to the visual signaling techniques discussed within this instruction, provided their use is standardized in a unit and understood by Soldiers and units working within their vicinity.
Visual signals have certain limitations. Range and reliability of visual communications are reduced when:
Terrain restricts observation
Visual signals are misunderstood
Visual signals are vulnerable to enemy perception
Leaders of mounted units use arm-and-hand signals to control individual vehicles and platoon movement. When distances between vehicles increase, flags are often used as an extension of the arm to aid visual communication.

Use Visual Signaling
-Visual signals are used to initiate battle drills (a reflexive response to a hostile environment made by a small unit) in order to maintain sound discipline while executing combat formations.
-Visual signals are also used for patrolling. Patrols are conducted by many different types of units; Infantry units patrol in order to conduct combat operations, while other units patrol for reconnaissance and security. Successful patrols require clearly understood communication signals among members of the patrol.
-Visual signals help to direct vehicle drivers and convoys. Flashlights or chemical lights are used at night to direct vehicles, and are often used with a blue lens to diminish effects on a Soldier's night vision. Red lenses may also be used to maintain light discipline in hostile environments.
