Lars Onsager was a Norwegian-born American physical chemist. He was born on November 27, 1903 in Oslo, Norway and died on October 5, 1976. Onsager graduated the Norwegian Institute of Technology as a chemical engineer and would go on to teach chemistry in America at Johns Hopkins University for one semester. He is most known for his contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics.
I chose Lars Onsager because he was Norwegian and I am also Norwegian.
1925- graduated from the Norwegian Institue of Technology
1925- corrected a theory on electrolytic solutions
1928- went to teach at Johns Hopkins University
1928-1933- taught at Brown University and made contributions towards thermodynamics
1968- awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry
1972- retired from his position at Yale University
Lars Onsager earned the Nobel prize for Chemistry because of his theory on the irreversible chemical processes. This theory was on nonequilibrium thermodynamics, when a system is not in equilibrium pertaining to the rates of chemical reactions. He studied physics briefly but is most know for his contributions to chemistry.
Lars Onsager discovered the "Onsager reciprocal relations". These laws express the processes between the flows and forces in a thermodynamic system when it is out of equilibrium.
