Everyday a new chapter will be added for you to listen to.
We are learning about the world around us.
We are very close to completing our work on investigating what makes day and night.
So far we have learned:
The last couple of activities will help us continue to understand the movement of Earth and the Sun and how the relative position of Earth and Sun affect seasons.
The final piece of assessment will be using
PowerPoint to demonstrate our learning.
How do we get winter and summer?
What do the seasons look like?
Where does the Sun go each night?
How do we get winter and summer?
How do we get seasons?
How does this effect how plants grow?
Learning Tip:
After watching each video:
1. Write down key words
2. Write a sentence or 2 about what you have learned
How are the seasons and the Sun linked?
Due to poor weather over the last few weeks, investigating shadows was one activity we never got to do.
This might be something you want to try at home.
Learning Intention:
We are learning how shadows are formed and how they move.
I CAN:
After you have completed all the activities, test your knowledge on shadows here: https://www.studyladder.com/play/activity-new/id/32571#
1. Questions to think about:
1. What is a shadow?
2. What is needed to make a shadow?
3. How do shadows change?
2. Shadow Art:
You will need:
Piece of paper
Toy or object
Pencil
Have a go at creating your own piece of shadow art.
2. Game to Play - Shadow Tag
The person who is 'it' must try and tag the other persons shadow.
3. Questions to think about:
1. Does your shadow move in the same direction as you?
2. Are you and your shadow joined?
3. How can you make your shadow longer or shorter?
4. Where is the sun in relation to your shadow?
5. What do you think causes this shadow?
Parent Tip:
How can you help your child record their results?
- draw a picture on paper
- use chalk to draw a shadow at multiple times
- take photos
- record your child's observations on video
4. Investigation
Design an activity that will allow you to track and measure the movement and distance of a shadow.
Think of everything you have learned about shadows to help you.
* It is best to start this activity in the morning and watch throughout the day.
* What materials do you have around the house that you could use?
Label your drawing
Shadows at Play
Create a labelled diagram of yourself, your shadow and the position of the Sun in relation to your shadow.
Take a photograph of your work and post it in the Shadow Assessment in TEAMS.
Quiz
Using the link in TEAMS complete the quiz. Mums and Dad can help read questions but you need to answer on your own.
Spinning in Space
Create an annotated drawing or image used to communicate what they have learned about day and night. Students show relative size of Earth, Sun and Moon, position and movement of Earth, Sun and Moon and why we have day and night.
HOW?
Students can draw a picture, record a video or create an image in PowerPoint. All work can be uploaded to the Spinning in Space Assessment in TEAMS.
We are learning to describe different ways to group specimens, consider claims about living specimens and identify patterns in data.
We are also learning to contribute to discussions about specimens, their observable features, and how to classify them and to classify animals into scientific groups using a branching key.

Step 2. What did you learn in the videos? Write what you have learned in your PowerPoint Science Journal or work book.
Step 1. Click the link to explore ‘Living’ animals in the garden and information about each using the magnifying glass. You should learn some more about features of the living things that you find which can help you think about and use when you classify different animals. Listen carefully to the introduction at the start and it will step you through what to do: http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L1118/L1118/index.html#

* Why do you think this video was made? What is its message?
3. Re-watch the video. During the second viewing, see if you can list the special features of Australia in your workbook under the headings from "What Makes Australia Unique Posters".
Read through each poster with a family member.
Write the headings in your book and over the term see how many examples you can write under each one.
Have you ever seen Australia represented on a map?
What did it look like?
Discuss these questions with a family member.
* How are large spaces divided into smaller spaces?
* How are the places where people live represented?
* How is the natural environment represented?
* Can places be mapped in different ways by different people?
Step 1. Click on the link below to view an interactive Map of Indigenous Australia.
https://aiatsis.gov.au/explore/articles/aiatsis-map-indigenous-australia
After looking at the map, see if you can answer the questions with a family member.
* How is this map of Australia different from the map developed by the British after colonisation?
* What do you notice about the distribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples across Australia?
* Why do you think this map is important for Australia and its history?
Step 2. Open the Story of Gulaga
Step 3. Open Oral Traditions - Song lines
Ask a family member to help you read this information.
For thousands of years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People have mapped the Australian landscape using songs, dances, artworks and stories. Most of these maps were not written down – they were orally passed on from generation to generation through sacred family ceremonies. These special maps, called ‘song lines’, follow the great journeys of the ancestors as they created the land, the animals and the laws of the people. Using these sacred song lines, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People could travel great distances across the country.
Watch the What Are Song lines? video on YouTube. After watching, see if you can answer the questions with a family member.
* What are song lines?
* Why might an Indigenous group need to move into a new area?
* Which natural features of the environment would Indigenous groups sing about?
Instructions:
Ask a family member to read The Story of Gulaga to you or listen to the audio link.
See if you can answer these comprehension questions with a family member.
* Who is Gulaga? Why is she important to the Yuin people?
* Why did Gulaga want Barranguba to move into the ocean nearby?
* What happened when Najanugu asked to move away from Gulaga?
This is a Dreaming Story told by the Yuin people of the Tilba Tilba region, located on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. The Story explains the creation of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary), Barranguba (Montague Island) and Najanuga (Little Dromedary). Gulaga is a site of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin people. She is the mother of their ancestors and a symbol of their spiritual identity.
This is the story of Gulaga, the mother mountain. She had two sons called Barranguba and Najanuga.
One day, Barranguba (the older son) decided to move away from his mother. When he told Gulaga what he wanted to do, she told him to move into the ocean nearby. Barranguba could watch the fish and the whales and the dolphins from there, but he would be close enough for Gulaga to keep an eye on him.
So Barranguba went out into the ocean and became an island.
Najanuga (the younger son) saw what his brother had done. He wanted to do the same. When he told Gulaga what he wanted to do, she told him he was too little to go out into the ocean on his own. Gulaga told Najanuga to sit right by her feet, so that she could keep watch over him.
So Najanuga stayed next to Gulaga, watching his big brother out in the ocean. He is the small mountain that sits beside the great mother mountain. He
stays with her always, just as she wanted.

All Year 3 Teachers will be working together to provide your child with a variety of learning activities to ensure your child can continue their learning at home during this event.
If at any stage you experience difficulties, emailing your teacher is the first point of call.
We have endeavoured to provide a range of activities that can be adapted to suit the level and learning style of your child.
While we will strive to deliver learning experiences that can be largely self-directed, we appreciate your support. Please remember that you can help your child at any stage, but please do not do it for them. Allow them to make mistakes then take time to review and reflect on how you can make it better.
