Through out the story of mice and men we start to see main goals the personality and moral dilemmas of one of the main characters george milton. At the beggining of the story he is a care taker of his friend lennie who has been with him since they were kids. throughout the text it shows that george is the brains of the operation when it comes to him and lennie, and lennie's the muscle. george is caring and intelligent when it comes to lennie but also has goals for the future.
one of george's goals is to work until he and lennie can by their own land, "someday, were gonna get the jack together, and were gonna have a little house and a couple of acres, an' a cow and some pigs, an' live off the fat a the lan" (page 8) this shows that george is ambitious because he is chasing and working after his dream of having his own land.
george is caring because of how much he deals with lennie like having to move because of something lennie did."Now you listen and this time you got to remember so
we don't get in no trouble." (page3) and having to make sure lennie dosent do anthing harmful to himself. "lennie dont drink so much-, youg gonna be sick like you was last night" (page2)
george is the brains of the operation that him and lennie have thats why george told lennie not to say a word when they got there. "Oh! I ain't saying he's bright. He ain't.
But I say he's a God damn good worker. He can put up a four hundred
pound bale." (page 11) this quote shows that lennie is the muscle but hes not very bright. which would make george the intelligent one
george believes in loyalty which is why he has stayed and taken care of lennie because lennie also takes care of him. "But he was too dumb even to know he had a joke played
on him. I had fun. Made me seem God damn smart alongside of him. Why, he'd do any damn thing I tol' him. If I tol' him to walk over a cliff,
over he'd go. That wasn't so damn much fun after a while. He never got
mad about it, neither. I've beat the hell outa him, and he coulda bust
every bone in my body jus' with his han's, but he never lifted a
finger against me." (bottom of page 21, top of page 22)
The last symbol for george would be his hands is chose the action of him shooting lennie because he knows lennie will just keep getting in trouble and george will never be able to accomplish his goal "George raised the gun and listened to the
voices. Lennie begged, "Le's do it now. Le's get that place now." "Sure, right now. I gotta. We gotta." And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger." (page 53)
I am caring, and ambitious
I wonder if would've ever lived out my dream with my friend lennie
I hear all of the people around me doubting me
I saw my lennie on the two acres the other day
I want to go back and do it all different
I am caring and, ambitious
I pretend I am there in the house
I feel the warmth of the air
I touch the door knob
I fear that lennie will not be there with me
I breathe before opening the door
I am caring and ambitious
I realize it cannot be
I think of my old friend
I wish he could come back
I try not to cry
I hope I will see him again
I am caring and ambitious
