Tech Comm - Week 10
Copyright, Privacy, APA, & More
Copyright
- Often easier, less expensive, and more effective to avoid "reinventing the wheel"
- But, we must consider the ethical and legal implications first.
- "Copyright law...is essentially a system of property" p. 201.
- "Anytime an idea can be fixed in a tangible medium, that communication can be copyrighted."
- Can't copyright an idea, just the presentation of the idea.
- Plagiarism - ethical issue, copyright infringment - legal issue.
Copyright
Copyright vs. Patent & Trademark
Copyright vs. Patent & Trademark
- Let's do some research to find out!
- See your text, or a reliable online source to add these definitions to your notes.
Establishing Copyright
As soon as it's in a tangible medium, it's copyrighted.
You can also register with Canadian Intellectual Copyright Office (extra evidence).
Rights
Copyright holders can:
- Reproduce
- Create derivitives
- Distribute
- Display or perform
- Give permission (full or limited) to others to use work
Using Copyrighted Material
Using Copyrighted Material
- Ask for permission.
- Or if it's in the "public domain" use it, but credit it:
- Author puts if there.
- Print material - copyright expires 50 years after death of author.
- Photos - 50 years after its taken.
Fair Use Doctrine
Different rules (you can use the material) if:
- Used in educational setting.
- Original material is published.
- Only small part being use.
- Use won't affect market value.
Still must have source clearly identified.
Privacy
Privacy
- Regarding Tech Comm, our focus is mostly on "information privacy"
- PIPEDA - Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.
- Typically need to notify, or get written permission before using any information you gather.
Let's Practice!
- Find a graphic or image online that you could imagine using in your manual and draft an email to the "owner" of the image to request permission to use the image as a part of your manual.
- No need to send it. Just practicing - how to do it, who to ask, what to say, etc.
APA Review
- Important to review before manual (and any other maor assignmetns you have for other classes.
- Cites and Sources or online equivalent - keep it handy during the writing process.
- Collect information as you go, saves time in the end.
APA Review
Why Use APA?
- Uniformity
- Allows reader to focus on content
- Protects you from Plagiarism
- Is mandatory at the College!

- Consistent text (TNR or Calibri or similar)
- Properly formatted heading, subheadings, etc.

Integrating Outside Info
In order to avoid plagiarism you must document all borrowed information (ideas and direct quotations).
This requires two things (can't have one without the other):
- In-text citations
- Reference List
In-text Citations
Direct Quotations
- Borrowing ideas and words - need three pieces of information (Reid, 2017, p. 22).
Paraphrased Information

How to Avoid Plagiarism
- Keep good records during note-taking.
- Use reserach to supplment not replace your ideas.
- Never copy and paste without documentation.
- Never submit work that is not your own.
- Never re-submit work that you've already been credited for.
