The Clearing

Outcast/misfit

Simon rarely participates in group gatherings and he has a different perspective compared to the leaders. He spends a lot of time by himself in the wilderness making him the outcast and misfit in society.

Simons role

The Assembly

With Simon being an outcast on the island his role isn't as prominent as the others. In fact, he often shies away from public speaking and prefers solitude. Nonetheless, he still contributes a great deal to the novel.

Simon's perspective

Perspective

Simon is often seen as an enlightened and spiritual character as he holds a different perspective compared to the other boys. For instance, as the group was discussing their thoughts about the beast, Simon came to the conclusion that the beast they truly needed to worry about was within them. He attempts to share this viewpoint but is quickly shut down. This further proves his outcast archetype.

Evil of mankind

Action

Simon recognizes and acknowledges the evil brimming within each of them and works to conquer it. An example of this would be Simon's urge to uncover the true identity of the beast. In unveiling its identity, Simon believes the boys would be able to face their fears and focus on the root of their problems, the beast within them.
