Sir William Crookes

Look at that facial hair!

About

About

  • Born: June 17, 1932 in London, England (eldest of 16 siblings)
  • Attended: The Royal College of Chemisty
  • Knited by the Queen of England
  • President of the Society of Psychical Research
  • Death: April 4, 1919

Contributins

Contributions

  • Studied Cathode rays and had many inventions to help contribute to the atomic theory. Most of these discoveries happened in the late 1800's)
  • Crookes Radiometer
  • Crookes Tube
  • Spinthariscope
  • He also discoved the element, Thallium (Tl)
  • Often used to kill pests
  • Atomic Number: 81
  • Discovered the Electron!

Cathode Rays

(Crookes Tube - 1875)

Cathode Rays

  • In order to prove that the movenment of electrons does NOT involve moving mass.
  • Electrons move from one side of the tube to the other and create a shodow
  • It does NOT knock down the anode, proving no mass is moving but only light, and elctrons from atom to atom.
  • He proved that they travel in straight lines and heat up when interacted with certain materials.

Crookes Radoimeter (1873)

Crookes Radoimeter (1873)

  • How it Works:
  • Metal vanes on a spindle are exposed to light
  • The more intense light, the fater the movement of the vanes
  • Gives a measurement of the amount of electromagnetic waves in the bulb.
  • This helps show the identity of the atom and the amount of electrons
  • Although, electricity must be placed on either side of the bulb
  • This converts light raditation into motion.

Spinthariscope (1903)

Spinthariscope (1903)

  • Purpose:
  • To find alpha rays in particles
  • Show by small flashing lights
  • Discovered:
  • Once spilt radium and in order to seek it, looked at slip under microscope and found flashing lights instead of florescent beams.

Theory

  • Believed that a negatively charged particle could move through thin sheets of material.
  • Too small to be an atom or molecule.
  • Theory proved correct, electron discovered!
