The Khejri tree ,prosopis cineraria, is considered to be as sacred as ‘Tulsi’ by many giving it an important religious significance. It is said that during the Mahabharat era, the pandavs had left their shastra under the protection of this tree.
This took place in 1731 in a small village south-east of Jodhpur, Rajhastan.

Amrita Devi was the one who led the first ever wildlife movement in the history of India. Due to her contribution and efforts, She had a national award named after her. It is called Amrita Devi Bishnoi Award which is awarded for contributions towards protection and conservation of wildlife.
Maharaj Abhay Singh was the king of Manwar (Jodhpur). He was the one who ordered the cutting of Khejri trees in Amita Devi's village in order to construct his new palace.
The Bishnoi Community refers to the people who live in the Western Thar and Northern regions and follow the teachings of Guru Jambeshwar. 363 people of the community sacrificed their lives in order to save the trees.
The death of Amita Devi and her 3 daughters inspired 363 more people of their community to give up thier lives by hugging the "Khejri" trees.
This in turn led to the rise of a much larger movement called the "Chipko Movement".
