Coffee in the Columbian Exchange

Coffee originated in Ethiopia during the 15th century ans was discovered by Kaldi. He noticed that after eating the beans from a certain tree, his goats became very energetic that they didn't want to sleep at night.

Origin/Spread

Coffee rapidly spread through the Columbian exchange. By the 16th century, it had reached Middle east, South India, Turkey, and northern Africa. From the Middle East, coffee spread to Italy, then to rest of Europe, and coffee plants were transported by the Dutch to the East Indies and to the Americas.

Coffee cultivation began in the Arabian Peninsula. The earliest cultivation of coffee can be traced back to the fifteenth century in Yemen.

Sufi monks drank coffee as a beverage to help them stay awake during their nighttime prayers.

Similarly, other Muslims, who for religious reasons were banned from drinking beverages, like alcohol, started to drink coffee

Soon Coffeehouses, known as kaveh kanes, multiplied throughout the Arab world

They were also used for socializing, education, and simply for fun

Coffee became known as “Arabian wine.”

Effects of coffee

By the mid 1600's, coffee was brought to New Amsterdam, later called New York, by the British. Though coffee houses rapidly began to appear, tea continued to be the favored drink in the New World

until 1773, when the colonists revolted against a heavy tax on tea imposed by King George III. The revolt, known as the Boston Tea Party, would forever change the American drinking preference to coffee.

Coffee in Venice

Venetian traders first introduced coffee to Europe in 1615.

Soon after, coffee became a fashionable beverage

By the 1650s, it was sold on the streets of Venice by lemonade vendors, along with liquor and chocolate

the first European coffeehouses were opened in the mid-1600s.

Europeans believed coffee had medicinal benefits, so coffee was claimed to cure drunkenness, smallpox, and nausea.

Like in Europe, in the New World, coffee started to replace tea, beer, and wine.

For a period of time, countries where coffee originated from, like Ethiopia and Egypt, were able to obtain the profits of growing and trading coffee, but soon the Europeans demanded more coffee.

And as coffee became more popular, coffee houses began to open up in Europe.Soon Europe's demand for coffee increased which also led to an increase of African slaves. These slaves were required to produce large amounts of coffee beans but were paid very little. Eventually, Europe stole Ethiopia and Egypt's profit.

Coffee and

slave trade

Under the Europeans in the eighteenth century, coffee led to colonialism and slavery. The eighteenth century was the height of the slave trade between Africa and the New World.

Slaves were forced to cultivate coffee on plantations throughout the Caribbean and parts of Latin America alongside other cash crops like sugar.

Egypt and Ethopia only benefited from the profits of coffee for so long. Later, Europe became the main benefited from this cultivation.
