Guided Questions

Guided Questions

  • Her goal in giving and making the speech was to tackle the stereotype that only gay men and drug users could contract AIDS.

  • The overall purpose of this speech was to show comfort and encouragement to those affected by AIDS. She also wants to spread the message that anyone can be at risk of contracting the disease and that we must dismantle the negative connotations the word AIDS carries.

Logos

Examples of Rhetoric

Fisher effectively used logos by including statistics of how many people are affected by AIDS.

"Two hundred thousand Americans are dead or dying. A million more are infected. Worldwide, forty million, sixty million, or a hundred million infections will be counted in the coming few years.

Pathos/ Anaphora & Epistrophe

Example of Rhetoric

Fisher's speech was extremely dense in pathos. She targeted emotions of fear the most, which helped her translate her message to the audience. She also used an anaphora and epistrope in her speech to help motivate people to be more sympathetic towards those affected.

"My call to the nation is a plea for awareness. If you believe you are safe, you are in danger. Because I was not hemophiliac, I was not at risk. Because I was not gay, I was not at risk. Because I did not inject drugs, I was not at risk."

Ethos

She included ethos in her speech by stating that she herself was HIV positive. This gives her first hand experience with the topic of her speech and validates the entire purpose of her speech, that anyone could be affected by AIDS.

Her speech was also articulate and she spoke with confidence and eloquence which creates a sense of trustworthiness.
