The Basics of Style of Our Play

Theories and systems, and how they connect to training athletes.

In the traditional soccer approach, training was understood as more linear and predicable. However, Barcelona's style of play not only goes in depth with different theories and systems, but how they intergrate them to each indivisual athlete and then team.

Saul Cancino

What is the Cartesian point of view?

Cartesian Point

The Cartesian point of view is understanding that organisms are made up of different parts of a whole that can then be looked at as smaller elements. Those smaller elements can have specific training.

Before the new approaches, traditional soccer was focused on training the indivisual elements rather than focusing on the whole.

Dynamic Systems Theory

Dynamic Systems Theory

A system is building blocks of an enity and how they connect to each other.

DST is focused on the whole rather than the smaller elements that make up the whole.

The New Perspective

The Dynamical Systems relate to the new perspective by understanding that the whole element working together brings fulfillment.

As complex as humans are, studying them as a whole is more effective than studying their indivisual parts.

Soccer is a nonlinear sport. Changes are happening constantly, and the athelete must make adjustments depending on the environement.

With the new perspective, soccer is looked at as a more complex sport. As a function, athletes are part of a bigger system than themseleves i.e. the team, coaches and environment. No two people or situations are the same, and because of that soccer training is nonlinear. The best outcomes can happen because of the uncertainity of what may happen. Adaptaion is a form of growth that continues to happen indefinitely.

The old saying goes, practice makes perfect. Although practicing can show that an athlete is understanding the movements, creativity is learning and exploring the possible outcomes that are not produced but happen organically. You can train your athelete to learn a certain move for a certain scenario but the conditions are everchanging; therefore, soccer is always a continious adapatation.

Complexity Theory

Although relatively new, the Complex Theory changes the traditional way of thinking by the following principles: uncertainity, totality, interdependence and spontaneous emergence. Soccer can be looked at as a complex system. There are many elements that go into a team. The team functions and adapts as one system. Complex systems go into depth by viewing the whole community i.e athletes, coaches, clubs, etc..

Complexity is defined by Google as the state or quality of being intricate or complicated. A complex system is made up of different parts that if seperated work differently, but as one work in unity.

Principles of the Complex Theory

The traditional soccer approach has been seen as a linear system, whereas the new soccer approach (DST) is nonlinear. The principles goes as following for the CT:

Uncertainty: a difficult behaviour the can not be anticipated in a prolonged period. Although I do believe that you can manipulate the results by applying certain behaviours ex. can't predict a defender going left on you when defending, you can give yourself more of a chance that he goes left by placing your body into his right to predit that result, unpredictability is apart of the game, and adapting is a constant.

Totality: The whole is equal to the sum of its parts. I understand this as the team, club and coaches are looked at as a whole, rather than singling every element out and focusing on that. The entirety of the club is focused on.

Interdependence: Each element in the system rely on each other. If one player changes they way they go about the sport, each part of the team is now affected. Rather than looking at each players growth, training or abilities, the entire teams abilities are looked at as one and how they will affect each other. Furthermore; I see the team as a system that is compromised as smaller elements working together for a common goal: to play soccer.

Spontaneuos Emergence:

Each principle relates to the new approach by connecting each part of the soccer club to itself and how their relationship works

A complex system will remain unpredictable, and that is how an athlete is viewed. Rather than focusing on manipulating the structure to get a fixed solution, allowing the athlete to explore the indefinite amount of solutions is how they adapt to new scenarious.

The interaction between coach and athlete is multilateral. Focusing on the best decisions for the athelete and team, implements dynamics in training that will balance their motor skills, arrange and strategize training, adapt with their athletes as they grow, and to not impose all scenarious but allowing athletes to analyze and make decisions. Coaches and athletes are on the same level with coaches being guidance for each player. Focusing on the athletes personal growth and team growth will allow the team to function together as a system that achieves their goals--as one.

Play the game, and with that effiency, effectiveness and involvenment will come. Train as you will play a game. Playing soccer is now about recovering the ball, taking possesion and playing soccer. Using the ball as a guide to ask questions about how the game is going. There is much going on: where is the ball, who has the ball, the path of the ball and direction of players now affect what decisions will be made. Each stage of the game will compromise of motivation of possessing the ball and playing the ball. Using positive terms will motivate the athlete to approach each stage with confidence.
