DEISM

Betül SEZEN

  • With the philosophical and theological debates that started in the Christian world from the 16th century, the term theism began to be used for the people who defended orthodox beliefs, and deism for the thinkers who deviated from traditional beliefs.

INTRODUCTION

  • One of the first uses of the word deism is found in Instruction chrestienne by Pierre Viret, a Calvinist theologian. In this work, Viret talked about a group of philosophers and writers who took the name of deists to distinguish themselves from atheists, and accused these people, whose identities he did not give, as atheists who believed in God and that He created the world, but denied Jesus Christ and the doctrines of Christianity.
  • It is accepting the existence of a creator God, but accepting that God did not intervene after creating the universe, therefore the institution of revelation and prophecy has no reality.

WHAT IS DEISM ?

  • Deism; it argues that the human mind is sufficient to obtain all kinds of information, and therefore there is no need for revelation.

SYMBOL

Is deism a religion?

No. Deism is a philosophical view based on the belief of the individual in God through reason and observation, without the means of religion, prophet or revelation.

QUESTION

  • Since religions are rejected, none of the concepts such as prophets, holy books, heaven and hell, angels and devils have a place in the belief of deism.

INFORMATIONS

A person who adopts this belief is called a deist.

Deism is about the mechanical universe, not the individual.

IN DEPTH

Deism focuses more on how than why.

Deism envisages an absolute determinist system.

What is deism based on?

It is based on reason and nature. When we look at the universe, we see an order, and this order leads us to belief in a God or a designer.

QUESTION

If Deism accepts belief in God, what is the difference between religions such as Judaism, Islam, Christianity?

QUESTION

Deism is based on nature and reason, not on revelation. All other religions are based on revelation or scripture. There is no need for a nun, imam, or priest in deism. All that is needed in deism is your own common sense and ability to think.

What is the perspective of deism on the theory of evolution?

QUESTION

Deism is not against the theory of evolution. According to deism, human beings may have emerged as a result of the evolution of more primitive living things, within the framework of the rules established by God. Believing in a Creator does not necessitate believing in the idea that that Creator created man all of a sudden, without any stages.

PICTURE

Although deism is a diverse and broad belief, it has some unchanging fundamental beliefs and principles. The core beliefs and principles are:

  • A belief in creative power
  • The belief that logic can teach us the truth,
  • Rejection of prophecies, miracles, religious dogmas, demagogues, and religions declared divine.

Deists often refer to the creative power as God.

BASIC BELIEFS AND PRINCIPLES

INFORMATIONS

There are two main forms of Deism: Classical Deism and Modern Deism. Modern deists wanted to combine the classical deism belief with modern philosophy and use it with today's science. In this direction, it has led to the emergence of many new beliefs. In classical deism belief; While a personal dialogue or encounter with God was made possible, today it is believed that God is superhuman and that understanding God is not within the limits of human logic.

As with every belief, deism has also changed itself over time. Beliefs or movements that emerged later are expressed by adding suffixes or names in order to avoid confusion. These are sub-branches derived from deism or combined with other beliefs, such as pandeism, panendeism, polydeism, Christian deism, philosophical deism, scientific deism, spiritual deism, process deism, humanistic deism, unified deism. There are also some minor subcategories of deism, such as amorian deism and pagan deism.

FORMS

How is Deism different from Theism?

DIFFERENCE

According to deist thought, the universe was created by a superior, supreme being. Deism, unlike theism, is dominated by the idea that God does not interfere with the workings of the universe. In other words, deism is compatible with theism in that it confirms the existence of a creative power, but deism differs from theism in that it does not accept the claim that God sent prophets and religions to people. Despite the theists' claim of divinity, deists see religions as a product of human experience and knowledge, and therefore reject their divinity. In addition, theists, unlike deists, are people who adhere to any religion.

IN BRIEF

God exists and is ultimately responsible for the creation of the universe. Equivalently, deism can also be defined as the view that reveals God's existence as the cause of everything and accepts his perfection, but rejects God's divine revelation or direct intervention in the universe through miracles.
