The Chemistry in Sports Medicine
Sports medicine is a field of medicine that focuses on the
prevention and treatment of injuries related to sports and
exercise. This field requires knowledge in physiology, biomechanics, anatomy and other skills such as communication and interpersonal skills.
The use of ice packs, inflatable excersize balls, etc. all contribute the the field of sports medicine
Sports medicine is connected to chemistry through the use of Ice packs, inflatable excersize balls, and other prescribed drugs.
Thermodynamic reactions involve the different methods of heat transfer. To be more specific, endothermic reactions, which are reactions that absorb heat and are cold to the touch, are a major factor into how ice packs work. When the instant ice pack is squeezed or activated, the ammonium nitrate dissolves in the water which causes an endothermic reaction. This reaction absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, which causes the temperature of the pack to drop rapidly.
Inflated Excersize Ball
Boyle's law is a common Gas Laws that is expressed through the use of inflatable exercise balls. This law demonstrates how the temperature remains constant, but the pressure and volume are directly proportional. For example, when the volume of the ball is reduced, the pressure within the ball increases.
Through the example given for ice packs, you can see and understand that through the dissolving of ammonium nitrate, heat energy is then taken in which makes an endothermic reaction.
We can see that chemistry is displayed in many places in sports medicine.
Consider Boyles Law, let's say you sit down on an excersize ball, what happens? The ball will lose some of it's volume while the pressure within increases. This is inversly proportional as Boyles Law states.
