Egypt and Mesopotamia Compare and Contrast

Adrianna Mattox

Social Stratification

The similarities in both of the social pyramids was that the king was always at top, and slaves were at the bottom. Merchants were always somewhat close to the bottom.

Social Stratification

Egypt

In the Egyptian social structure, the pharaoh, or king was at the very top. Then came government officials, soldiers, scribes, merchants, craftsmen, then peasants, and lastly, slaves.

Egypt

Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia

In the Mesopotamia social structure, at the very top is the king. Below him are the priests. Then come the nobles, then the government officials, and then merchants, farmers, and traders. At the very bottom were all the slaves that worked for the people above them.

Religion

They were both polytheistic, and had tons of gods that controlled a certain aspect of life on Earth. Whenever something was needed, like rain, the Egyptians and the Mesopotamiains prayed to their certain god or goddess that brought rain.

Religion

Egypt

Egypt

Egyptians didn't consider their gods as part of a religion, they considered them a normal part of life. They had about 700-plus gods and goddesses that had an aspect of life that they controlled. Their pharaoh was considered a living god, who represented the will of the gods. And it's my personal opinion that their religion is more interesting.

Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia had hundreds of gods, each with their own letter of activity. They worshipped their gods at a ziggurat, or a temple. They left prayer statues to keep praying to the god they wanted to pray to while they went along their daily lives.

Geography

Both civilizations lived near massive rivers, and both rivers flooding during certain times of the years to help Egyptian and Mesopotamian farmers with their crops.

Geography

Egypt

All of Ancient Egypt revolved around the Nile River. The flooding helped farmers with their crops. The river had cataracts, which made it hard for possible invaders to get into Egypt. So it also provided a form of protection.

Egypt

Mesopotamia

Mesopotamia was located in the Fertile Crescent. Civilization lived near the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. The flooding of the rivers helped with irrgation for crops.
