Intro to Mythology

Think to yourself:

What myths have you read?

What myths have you seen?

Greece? Where is it?

Greece is in Southern Europe. It is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe.

Mainland Greece is a mountainous land almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. It has more than 1400 islands.

Throughout the course of the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on Greek Mythology.

  • Myths tell stories about natural events, people, and animals
  • They were early literature and science
  • The myths usually told a story about the difference between right and wrong and good and evil
  • Myths are almost always about gods and goddesses

There are two types of myths:

  • Myths will teach a moral or a lesson.
  • Or they can explain the unexplainable

The twelve most important gods and goddesses of ancient Greece, called the Olympians, belonged to the same quarrelsome family. All the Olympians lived together in an enormous palace set well above the usual level of clouds at the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.

Examples of some myths and what they explain....

The myth of Daedalus and Icarus shows us that the power of man has no limits but also that we should be very careful how to use this power.

The myth of Persephone, the sweet daughter of Greek goddess Demeter who was kidnapped by Hades and later became the Queen of the Underworld, is known all over the world. This is actually the myth of the ancient Greeks to explain the change of the seasons.

The myth of King Midas is a myth about the tragedy of avarice and narrates what happens when true happiness is not recognized.

Arachne, her name meaning spider in Greek, was a beautiful woman that had a great talent in weaving. Everyone was amazed at her work and one day, Arachne boasted that she had a greater talent than goddess Athena herself. This myth explains why you shouldn't boast or brag (especially to a goddess).

You will be asked to build your background knowledge on different types of myths. They could be from Rome, Egypt, China, or India. These reading activities are VITAL to your ability to read our next novel. I challenge you to delve into each activity or passage so that you are completely ready to immerse yourself in this most exciting novel.
