KARMA (WORK)

WHAT IS PRAKRTI ?

  • All works, secular & scriptural - Prakrti

  • Using - its effects, sense objects & instruments

  • Prakrti - direct & the causative agent for every action.

GUNA

  • Gunas- vary in strengths and ratio- determines nature, action, attachment to work.

GUNA THEORY

The theory of the gunas explains what this universe is made of and how it came to manifest itself as mind and matter. Each guna has its own characteristics

TAMAS

VOCATION

  • Vocation - always in tune with Prakrti - svadharma
  • There is no way a tamasic mind can become rajasic and then sattvic as far as choice of vocation is concerned.
  • Vocation is predetermined - different disciplines are prescribed for Brahmin, Ksatriya, Vaisya and Sudra.

WHAT IS PURUSA ?

  • One's true self

  • Unaffected by the external factors

PURUSA (SELF)

  • Prakrti as the agent - does not get affected by the outcomes of work

- has untainted understanding

- work becomes the medium for creative expression

  • Self as the agent - affected by the outcomes of work
  • They have a deluded intellect - ignorant of prakrti
  • Does not understand the difference between self and the work

PRAKRTI VS PURUSA

  • Action & renunciation are not contradictory.

  • Action - not mere movement of body

  • Renunciation - not abstention from action

  • Renunciation promotes true action with absence of desire

  • Gita advocates detachment from desires and not cessation from work
